I agree. I’ll add 7mm-08 as a good choice to that as well. The reason being that When put head to head in any realistic hunting scenario, the 6.5 has no advantage over 7mm-08 in anything except for slightly reduced recoil.

I will admit that ammo availability has been much better for 6.5 creedmore the past couple of years though. Other than that it brings nothing new to the table.

Yep. On paper, 7mm-08 actually outperforms 6.5

I have one and like the round. I shot Hornady soft points and both deer I shot died right there or within a few steps.

It will be just my backup rifle/loaner because I still prefer my old Win Model 70 best.

I expect ammo to become harder to get as this country becomes more socialist. You may want everyone shooting the same caliber, so you use each other's ammo. My two boys and I all shot 30.06, whenever I see a box I buy it, that way if only one of us is seriously into hunting 10 years ago, he will have plenty of ammo.

The Cripplemore is a product of incredible marketing. Nothing wrong with it, but it isn’t the world beater some would have you believe. It would be a good round for your son to start out with.

I built a custom 6.5 on a Rem 700 platform. I wish I could post a pic of it. I put a custom Rem barrel, muzzle brake, Woox stock, custom Sachlis trigger.
I am using HMS 140 grain with berger bullets. I can put five touching at 200 consistently. Hornady match doesnt work nearly as well.
I was skeptical but I do like the caliber now.

The biggest problem with the creedmoor is the factory “hunting” ammo that companies choose to load are mostly rebranded target bullets that won’t perform but maintain the highest BC possible.

Shoot regular or premium 140gr or more soft points. Ideally 156's if you can find them.

Any recommendations? I see Norma and S&B quite often.

If zeroed with 140, what adjustments do you make for the 156?

It is correct. I can only speak on my experience.

Using Hornady 143 gr ELDX. Specifically because it is one of the heavier hunting cartridges I can find for the gun.

Thats a poor choice even though the weight is good. Its just a rebranded Amax. use a normal soft point or copper hunting bullet. Something kinda rounded like a norma oryx, partition, or hornady interlock will perform excellent.

If the bullet looks sexy its the wrong choice for hunting with 6.5's.

Calm down chief. So your beef is me saying it was invented for varmints? That can be argued either way.

What can't be argued is that even with the heaviest bullets offered, it is not a good choice for the inexperienced to shoot a larger deer like we have in most of Louisiana. There are better choices that have not much more recoil.

I have a .280 by the way and a close friend has a 7mm Express. I know a little bit about cartridge history and am familiar with Remington's screw ups. It they would have offered the .280 in a bolt gun Jack O'Connor likely would have chosen it. Had that happened the .270 would be the lesser known.

Crazy to think that with all those sweet old military rifles they used to be the cheapest thing you could get. They all eventually get to a point where modifying one is sacrilege and matching numbers examples become valuable. Not that long ago you could get a matching numbers like new 1896 for like $100

Now that select fire weapons are standard issue, I don't know that we'll ever have the opportunity to buy surplus weapons again. The M1 might be the last hurah.

Winchester introduced the 270 in 1925. Jack O Connor started using it in the 30’s I believe. Remington didn’t come out with the 280 until 1958. Why do people make up stories.

Bought my son (12) a 6.5 Creedmore, I have been way less than impressed on the impact performance on deer. It doesn't have the punch needed, even on well placed shots.

Sounds like poor shot placement or poor bullet selection. Are you using a hunting bullet? Is the shot going into the vitals? A 6.5 Creedmoor should flip a southern whitetail upside down - at most maybe run and stagger for 50 yards. If that isn’t enough, then a 300 win mag isn’t enough either for whitetails within 300 yards. Make sure you aren’t using match ammo instead of a good hunting bullet.

I’m not going to read all of it kinda late to the party. I’m sure cripplemore has been said at least 20x by the cool kids. I won one at a raffle, my son started shooting it and has never crippled one animal. He’s killed a truck load of doe and 4 bucks with the rifle. Just my .02’s
