Lotta shite ended up being correct and working over time but not necessarily for the reasons why they believed so.

Yes, my mom was bi-polar.

I really fear my son is going to inherit my genes. I'm like please just let it skip him.

But you know what, because of all the crap, I'm really well aware and in my opinion a good advocate for mental health. It's kind of embarrassing to say I wanted to commit suicide here, but I like to share in case it ever helps one person even. Because I'm still here.

My son takes after me in a lot of ways, for better or worse. When he started showing symptoms, I was able to help and talk to him about it, whereas my wife had no experience dealing with those things and didn’t quite understand.

Exactly, I spent a few days hospitalized on suicide watch many years ago. Having a security officer standing at the door while I used the restroom was no fun. Like you said, though, I’m still here. I’m actually in a better place mentally now than I’ve been since my twenties, and I have a life of experience dealing with this to use for helping my son overcome it.

Goes into the category of "works, but dunno why". I think antidepressants only partially go into that category. You can make then ineffective by depleting serotonin, so it does seem they rely on increasing monoamines.

Cheers man.

I'm the happiest I've ever been in my life, and without meds, but there is something very different in brains like ours that "normal" people.

I'm not a doctor, so take this for what it's worth, but I believe that the mental health industry in this country is largely a scam. I'm not saying mental health is a scam; I absolutely believe people have mental health problems, but I think the whole "give them a pill" response (hello, Xanax) for every mental health diagnosis is nothing more than easy money for pharmaceutical companies.

Have a look at positive psychology studies led by Martin Seligman and Shawn Achor re: peoples' signature positive factors that drives happiness.

Are there interactions with neurotransmitters, yes! But it is not just about the characteristics of the neurotransmitters (amount, re-uptake speed/quality, enzymes); it is not simply "chemical imbalances".

The signature factors that drive things like people's optimism and hope that make positive emotions tend to impact happiness (and its offset of depression) matter. These factors involve belongingness, people identifying with a meaningful life and purpose, accomplishment, etc.

We humans like to boil solutions down to pills, when we should focus first on connection and mindset.

May still be a place for the pill, but it is likely more exceptional than we are led to believe.

You mean to tell me we most likely have crisis of predominately purpose and priority, not a pandemic of depression to be fixed by simply throwing drugs at the problem?

Of course it does, but it takes effort and discipline

I agree. Wouldn't flare badly with hormone fluxes if it wasn't hormone-related.

Some dude doesn't want to go to work one day so we give him pills to make him "not sad."

What we don't take care of is the dude sleeps like shite, doesn't excercise, eats like shite, and watches and consumes fear porn news 12 hours a day.

But yeah, it's just a chemical imbalance and there's nothing he can do about it but get medicated.
