how does feeling sorry for someone make a person have good character?

I am sure killers, rapist, and thieves feel sorry for people

Ran across one when I went to the mall a few weeks back approaching cars with his "Help me" sign. When I was pulling out observed him getting in his car and driving away.

Most of them are just trying to get money for their daily drugs.

That's not my duty and I'm not a shrink. It is, however their duty to leave my property alone. I will not finance their issues, because I do not believe I am doing them a service by helping them. I have learned that the hard way.
Another example: When someone wants money because they're hungry, they don't turn down the hamburger you offer to buy them "because I don't eat fast food".

I see so many homeless here in portland..

if I was down on life and that was just the way it was going to be, in this state..id get a tent and move way out into the woods near a lake. I would fish and forage far away from addicts and insane individuals. Eventually building a setup like in Alone.

Screw living in the city and depending on kindness from strangers who have already grown weary. There is beautiful nature.

Getting burned by the ones who frequent this area will tend to do that. "Real Character" has nothing to do with it. Put me down again for a "no"- and put it in all caps.

while i appreciate getting burned can make you callous (i mean how would you know though, you stalking them after you give them money) it is a little sad you cant empathize with any that are legitimately in a hard way and need help.

Again this isnt about giving money. i dont give them money 99% of the time. I realize that doesnt solve the bigger problem and may even fuel the demise of that person. You can do both, have empathy but act rationally.

Of course I feel sorry for them, but subsidizing them would result in even more of them, so I don't give them money.

I assure you, this is false. The vast majority of them are drug addicts. Few are actually mentally ill.

In Baton Rouge, a popular spot is off Siegen and Interstate. Almost every single one there used to get fed for free at the Deli in the shopping center. They pool a few dollars each, and rent rooms weekly at the horrible hotels off of Rieger Road. They beg for a few hours. Take their cash, go to the room, and do drugs until they pass out.

They wake up, walk over to McCalister's, get perfectly good food that will be thrown out that day. They eat. Rinse. Repeat.

The money you give them is being used strictly for rental of the hotel room, which is a tiny portion, and the rest is spent on drugs. That's the truth.

See if you can follow this concept:

You can still feel sorry for someone without giving them money. That's all I'm stating. It's pretty simple.

well, given time and depending on the drugs used it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

Gets to a point where you can't tell if someone was always crazy or if they fried their brain and body over the years of abuse

That's pointless other than to make yourself feel good.

Ask them.

Yes Sir. That is certainly true of those who stay in the Siegen Lane area of Baton Rouge, without question.

You'd have to be here. Just trust me.

Let me just say if you ever come down here for a game and some Wisenheimer suggests that you stay in one of the wonderful hotels off of Siegen Lane- specifically Rieger Road- punch them. No one will think ill of you.

A bible quote from Proverbs is the most downvoted post in this thread. That's something.

It was downvoted because these types of quotes do nothing more than make people feel guilty about not handing money to "homeless" people. If you give money to the people on Siegen, you might as well be giving them heroin. Not sure that's part of my Christian duty.

There are myriad legitimate businesses and churches who help to feed/clothe the poor, set them up with literacy classes, job interviews, housing, etc. Go help clean up a neighborhood, work on homes with Habitat for Humanity, teach job skills to someone. THAT is what Proverbs is referring to.

These people could make exponentially more money with half the time spent working a job at Walmart or McDonald's as opposed to begging on the street and playing in traffic.

One of the problems is we keep raising minimum wage, which creates unemployment among people whose labor is not worth the minimum wage.

Another issue is people like you described are not going to be hired by McDonalds or Walmart. The people like you described cannot be trusted to work around other people.

Some people are unemployable. The best we can hope for is to have these people pick up trash (they demonstrate this skill every day) in and around homeless shelters in exchange for food and shelter.
