The last pay-per-view conference game I remember USC having was 05.

It was against Vandy.

The BCS was lucky there was a clear 1 and 2 almost every season.

Just recently we've had a few seasons where 3 teams had a rightful claim to a 1 vs 2 championship game.

2019

LSU 13-0
Ohio State 13-0
Clemson 13-0

2018

Alabama 13-0
Clemson 13-0
Notre Dame 12-0

2017

Clemson 12-1
Oklahoma 12-1
Georgia 12-1
Alabama 11-1

Three years in a row of that would have broken college football. The BCS got really lucky every season that things worked themselves out.

You’re not considering the scheduling affects downstream of the change or any other variables for that matter. The outcomes would have been different in the BCS system.

The powers / decision makers have obviously been motivated by near term financial incentives as everyone is saying. The problem is the feedback loop is so delayed that by the time the product declines and fans stop watching (which may or may not happen) it’s way too late to undo all the changes that have been made. There’s been no consideration for the long term effects on the sport and its integrity. We’ll see what we’re left with when the dust all settles in a few years

Well no shite. Nobody knew how bad the playoff system would suck.

That’s not true. There were a few of us on here who were against a playoff.

Unlike College Baseball and Basketball,
Teams are limited to playing one game a week in football.

Unlike the nfl where you have 32 teams
In a clear conference and division setup to fairly place objective standards on qualifying for the playoffs, you’ve got 130 teams in conferences of varying strength, making the criteria for choosing the
Teams entirely subjective….well, except for historical bias and the all mighty dollar playing a role.

No, the BCS was not perfect it worked pretty well after 2005 when they finally settled
on a formula, with one notable exception.

Whatever problems the BCS had were only magnified by the CFP.

Now this is revisionist history. Almost every year of the BCS there was some controversy about 1 of the teams. You forget in years like 1998 2000 and 2001 because the lone undefeated team won. The BCS was designed for a year like 2005 where 1 of the top 2 would have been locked in the Rose Bowl

And it finally took NIL to crash the ship. We had a good run I guess.

Every decision has been made to help the top 1% get fatter and richer. That’s how it always goes. The other 99% be damned

NIL is no different. It helps the top 1% of athletes get richer, and is a net negative for the rest

Unlike pro sports, NILs are not sustainable for the sport. So I agree, college football is in big, big trouble.

There are a few teams that are absolutely okay with how this has turned out

One is the power in the B1G

One is the power in the SEC

One is the power in the ACC

You see a theme?

CFP was good.

They should’ve used BCS rankings instead of the committee though

What, that you couldn’t watch lower tier matchups? Y’all didn’t have AggieVision or something like that?

If your team or its opponent didn’t rate televised games, you should thank the powers that were for saving you from bad football

I didn’t forget at all. For more than the second half of the BCS you had the one deserving non-SEC team vs an SEC team. Things worked themselves out nicely. 2018 and 2019 would have broken college football in the BCS system.

From 2005 to 2013 the BCS had two clear cut teams for 1 and 2. That’s a long streak of things working themselves out nicely for the BCS to make it look like a good system.

and now, it doesnt matter because every single game played at the fbs level has some way of viewing it live in a rather easy manner

again. that is objectively better for the sport

Worked better before 2005. In 2003 I had a printout on my refrigerator showing what games needed to go which way for each contender.

Giving the pollsters too much say made it a lot worse.

it blurs the lines, but revenue generation isn’t a binary thing. 99% of these kids generate revenue for the schools due to the brand of the universities. if a rogue 18-22 year old “minor league football” industry popped up, I think it’d fail immediately. the obsession comes from the inextricable links we have to the institution, not the players that come through in most cases. should they be compensated? of course. would Kyle Field be full if a group of walkons from Alabama came to play a group of walkons from A&M? maybe not this fall, or the next, but I think that’s the ultimate destination we’re headed for

I could be wrong but it feels like they're definitely heading in the direction of killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.
