Why has Pickleball become so popular?

So I'm hearing about Pickleball all the time now. I'm on Brees' Instagram and he's talking about Pickleball. Just saw some lady post about how she went to the park to play a pick up game and ended up playing with 3 Pittsburgh Steelers players. My city is converting public tennis courts to pickleball courts etc
Everywhere I look, it's pickleball. Why the surge in popularity in what seems like all of a sudden? Does anyone here play? I don't even know how it's played, but I'm open to trying it out.

Because tennis was a HUGE sport in the 80's and the people who played it are getting too old to play now. So the smaller court and limited movement of pickleball appeal to them.

It’s the latest hipster trend of obscure sports to ‘be cool’ to be interested in. It’ll fizzle out once ‘softball guy’ gets wind of it and comes and ruins it for everyone.
When I was in my 20s, kickball was the trend. Before that it was frisbee games.
A few years ago, Axe throwing became popular.
These all usually last 5-7 years or so until ‘softball guy’ starts taking it way too seriously then the unathletic new hipster generation will move onto something else.

They are putting pickle ball courts in malls, church gymnasiums, etc. They are even taking tennis courts and turning them into. Pickle ball courts.

Not true.
One of the massive super neighborhoods around me has like 16 tennis courts. They recently converted half of them to Pickle ball. Now when you go by the pickle ball courts are SLAMMED on a Saturday afternoon. Tennis courts are barely being used.
I havent played yet. But my understanding is its kind of like if Ping Pong, Badminton, and tennis had a baby.
Doesnt have the massive learning curve that tennis and is much easier for a wider array of people.

Funny you should mention that. Five or six years ago, every other commercial on WJOX (B'ham) was for a new axe throwing place, well that lasted a year or two and I haven't heard one since. Axe throwing started in Jxn, MS in the last year (yes we are 5-6 year behind on everything), I wonder how long it will last, I think it is already on it's way out.

It's a really fun sport, easy to start playing and be proficient within a few hours/days.
Fast paced battles at the net are unique to the sport and a lot of adrenaline/fun.

Because it's a ton of fun, doesn't take a lot of athletic ability, and is cheap. My wife and I play it and disc golf all the time.

I went on a date the other night and the girl talked about playing shuffleboard and pickle ball with her young boys. I dated another woman whose children were all in to rock climbing.

My neighborhood converted two tennis courts into six pickle ball courts and I started playing 2 years ago. Some reasons for its popularity in my neighborhood;
1. Anyone can play. There are retirees pushing 85 that can get together and play.
Us middle age people are able to get together and play. Our kids also like to play. I don’t have a background in tennis and would never be able to get on the court with high level tennis players. However, I can play and have good pickle ball games with the club tennis champs.
2. There is a social aspect. We like to play on Friday nights and will have a few drinks and hang out after it gets dark.
3. You can play competitive games if you want or you can just play for fun. We have a core group of about 12 players that play at a competitive level. However, we also invite new players and teach them the game.
4. You get exercise. While not as strenuous as some other sports you are moving around in the fresh air. The first time you play you will feel it the next day with all of the lunging and squatting,
These are just a few of the reasons I enjoy playing. I’m sure others have their own reasons for playing,

Pickleball is less about shot making than what tennis can be for most people. From the serve to the return it's more about positioning your opponent where you want them to be. Tennis should be similar and is for those who are very good BUT moving your opponent or keeping them back is more easily done in pickleball than tennis so it appeals to a wider audience.
Most importantly, people don't grunt nearly as much so thats always a plus.

old people like tennis but don't have the knees for it.
