Yeah, when we first let our kid branch out on his own with YouTube the main rule was the creator had to be family friendly (no cussing, nothing innappropriate etc). Turns out a lot of these dudes are major shite heads regardless of the family friendly label. There's a handful i wont let him watch because, like you said, kid will act like an arse after watching them.

Exactly! When he's watching YouTube, the world around him ceases to exist. He doesn't answer calls from his mom or dad. He even watches it when she's facetiming him. He just switches back to YouTube and ignores her. This kid can be a massive shite head

My parents wouldn’t let me turn on my console until I finished homework and if it was nice outside I was encouraged to go outside. I had a dirt bike and four wheeler so I did stuff outside a lot I just wasn’t the type to play a game for hours on end. I would get home, play outside or ride my dirt bike or four wheeler through some trails by the creek behind the house, eat dinner, do homework, then play games

This is a strategy for parents who do t know or don’t want to parent their kids correctly. How about teaching your kids discipline instead of banning it. Also they have a million and one ways now to limit hours on devices and video games.

Our kid has a switch. We only allow him to play on the weekends, and he likely spends 6 hours between Friday and Sunday gaming. He has to do chores to earn the privilege and we have no problem not letting him play for a couple weeks if he isn’t meeting our expectations.

Honestly I think he plays a little too much, but my husband convinces me not to nag about it. I didn’t wake up and play video games on Saturday morning as a kid. However, we sure as hell got up before our parents to watch 3 hours of awesome violent cartoons and eat an entire box of cereal with many, many spoonfuls of sugar.

None allowed at my house.

It shows in their grades.

And the scholarship offers.

I had them in my house plus they had laptops and phones when they were old enough. Both Valedictorians, both never made a B on a report card once handwriting was not graded ( ), both had/have scholarships at LSU, one graduated in December, the other is about to complete her Junior year, she has a 3.96 GPA.

Those games alone are not ever the issue. Also, if they have a laptop, desktop PC or smartphone, they have access to games.

We never allowed them. It tvs in their rooms for that matter. So mine went outside or they picked up guitars. Video games are a pleasant time-killing, hobby- denying narcotic. If you don’t indulge, chances are you’ll engage with people and do something much cooler with your life. All my kids have thanked me. You can yap at me about this but you know it’s true.

I don't understand this mentality. Video games are entertainment, just like board games, drawing, playing outside. It's just a different type. People seem to assign some kind of value to this activity as if everything one does in life has to be a learning experience. The kids who like them have a blast doing it because they're mostly just talking to their friends the whole time.

If I hear another "back in my day we enjoyed board games" blah blah. Well, my kids do that too, but a kid in the 1950's wouldn't choose checkers over Madden. They just didn't have it.

Everything in moderation, and be the parent and set limits. My house, my rules. It isn't that hard.

I dont get this mentality. They both have straight A's and a extracurricular activity (gymnastics and drum lessons).

Why take away something they enjoy? If in response to bad behavior or academic performance, ok. But just b/c you disapprove or can't relate? Seems counterproductive.

Probably about as much benefit as people spending half their day posting on this board. Yet here we all are.

All you are going to do is turn them into bigger gamers.

I’m 50 and we definitely played a bunch of Nintendo and Sega Genesis when I was kid. I can remember going to a friend’s house to spend the night, going to Blockbuster to rent Nintendo games, and staying up all night playing them. Kids being into video games isn’t a new thing.

Stick to your guns bro....all these losers in here talking about they still play video games as adults...they are losers, bunch of fatties who dont even have a letterman jacket. You dont win youth football championship rings by playing video games. Ask yourself a question....is playing video games gonna help your kid run a 4.4 40 and bench 300 pounds so he can throw a devastating downfield block on gamerboy johnny.....hell no it wont.

an hour in the weightroom is more valuable than a lifetime of gaming...

stick to your guns....dont want him to grow up to be a loser who has to finance a waterbed like many in this thread. :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa:

In all seriousness OP....can there be balance? its ok at the end of the night after everything is done if they would rather play a game for an hour than watch tv? WTF is the difference?

personally my kids dont play much video games and when they do its sports games, thats just what they enjoy....but they do have lots of friends who play a ton. Some of the kids are the most responsible ones in the world....some are kind of shite heads. The gaming seems to have a lot less affect on that than which ones come from broken homes and which dont or which have strong male influences and which ones have fathers that are more feminine.

in other words...if they like playing and its the end of the night...sure why not. But if the sun is out......they are out. Just have to be.....you know.....a parent.

Apparently they’re a huge issue in marriages as well. I was shocked to hear how many grown men play video games at the expense of their responsibilities as a dad/husband.

I dropped them, too, because it was such a time sink. Most of my friends play them all the time. I don't see how they can just sit there all the time. All the guys in my office start playing when they get home and stop when they get sleepy. Then they complain about all the things that need to be done around the house, or things broken, or wives complaining. Uh, yeah man.

But i wouldn't stop kids from totally playing video games. I would stop them from doing any tech while eating.
