Hey guys, we recently got a quote from Assured Flooring (Baton Rouge area) for the removal of tile, laminate flooring, and install of vinyl flooring in our kitchen/dining room/bathroom areas. We have all of the materials already, so the quote given is for labor only.

For approximately 680 sq ft, they’ve quoted $5,080 which I feel like is pretty expensive. Am I way off base, or does this sound about right to what others have gotten done? Should I get another quote?

Edit: link to itemized quote LINK

You should definitely get another quote, regardless of whether that one feels off base. But yes, that does seem very high. I’d expect $3-5/ft2 for demo and install. And $5 is wayyyy on the high side.

Gonna charge you 85 to remove a toilet? Thats like a 15 min job. 2 nuts that hold it down and close the supply valve and unscrew the supply hose.

I’m in Covington and $3/sqft is what I was quoted by multiple companies to remove tile and glue down engineered, but that was with haul away too. I would make sure they’re doing that at that price. I did LVP new and it was $1.75 sqft install, but it was floating so the install was cheap. Your patch seems high but don’t know what your job entails. Your project isn’t a lot of sqft either so that may be why the $/sqft is high.

For mine, I rented a demo hammer from Home Depot and took up my tile myself. I already had a dumpster so it was no big deal although some pretty physical work. I tried to take up the engineered too and it was an absolute nightmare. If yours was a crap install, it may be easy for you to take up. Mine was installed well and it came up inch by inch and in shards. Ended up paying the guys to remove the engineered and they came in with a riding scraper machine that knocked it out in a day.

Go ahead and try removing properly installed tile and Urethane glued down wood floors.

My wife(no pics) and I had a situation similar to yours. We purchased all material for new bathroom floors, shower surround, and bedrooms from Pro Source. The material that was purchased was based on quantities provided by an installer who was recommended by Pro Source. When it came time to install flooring and wall tile he did not return our calls. Assured was recommended by an acquaintance and we negotiated installation only price in the same way that you have done. IMHO their prices were very reasonable considering the quality of their work I hired two men to demo the existing ceramic in the master bath and it is a very tedious and labor intensive process. It was necessary to rent a floor grinder to provide the final prep to the concert. Something else to consider is that Assured has provided an itemized quote which is something other contractors did not provide. Should you choose Assured I believe you will be well pleased with the quality of their work and I have no affiliation with their company. Each day their crews were on site a project manager made site visits twice a day to make sure we were happy with everything.

Virtually impossible with consumer tools.

Fighting it now. 600sqf using hand tools with razor blades is the only thing remotely working. Machine we rented had a shite blade that is supposed to be beveled in one side, but someone sharpen both sides. Tried boiling water, glue removal products, heat gun. Shits ridiculous.

This in a nutshell. Removing tiles, especially stuff down in thin set and grouted in is a HUGE PITA to deal with and messy as hell.

Glued down laminate is no fun either.

Most people that are shocked by labor pricing really have no clue as to what is involved in the job and what it takes to do it right.

Be sure to discuss how much of the baseboard/shoe moulding they will reinstall and touchup if needed.

If it’s so easy then he can do it himself. I’m a contractor and the people who say things like this are usually selfish tightwads. How do u expect them to make a living. What’s he gonna charge $5 to remove a toilet

More than reasonable pricing. If it cost too much then do it yourself. Contractors have too many expenses and I’ll be the first to tell you ripping up tile to the quality needed to install other flooring takes time. I’m doing a house right now that is 400 sqft tile and it’s taken me three days with a machine just for reference.

How many doorways, cased openings, different levels, separate areas, all adjoining, how many stairs, one level, how long a walk from truck, is it all way through house, near external doors, are you a nice guy, what's the neighborhood like, part of town, near-far for them? The wife did she seem unreasonable, are you an attorney... artist... too demanding, how busy are they? Were they recommended? You seen their work? Moving the refrigerator, washer, dryer, all on you (and where to)? Who re-installs toilet? How are extra's handled... thresholds, quarter round, Schluter strips? How was current flooring installed, tile on concrete, floor glued on slab or sub-floor? How long will it take (estimate) ball park, is there time constraints? Pets? Anyone work shifts?

I always love these quote guessing parties.

Demo? You've got to do that yourself to keep your man card. Unless there's murcury or hazadous materials involved. How much of a gigantic pussy are you?

Vinyl floors show every imperfection in the substrate. To remove tile and (probably) grind the slab is expensive and labor intensive. If you want cheap, cut the bottoms of your doors off, rip off the shoe molding, and lay the vinyl over the tile. Kidding. Mostly.

And the cherry on top... you will be finding dust everywhere no matter how well you covered things and even if you go with one of the 'dustless' machines/companies

I would live with existing tile, lay something on top of it, or just move before I went through that again.

Sorry for the late update. I checked with a few contractors, and Assured actually ended up being the least expensive quote we found by a significant margin.

We're gonna move forward with them and I can provide another update once they're done if you're interested in a review.
