re: Baton Rouge - Dallisgrass has overtaken backyard. Plan of action?
Posted by thatoneguy on 6/19/25 at 4:18 pm to Bamafig
Lucky for me I just came into possession of a golf course. However, it’s a pretty small one and I don’t need the giant containers online that are $100+. Is there anywhere in the Baton Rouge area that I can get one smaller? Or is this something I just need to order online?

It’s really not manageable at this point. Backyard is about 2k sqft and over half has been covered by the dallisgrass
Baton Rouge - Dallisgrass has overtaken backyard. Plan of action?
Posted by thatoneguy on 6/19/25 at 12:04 am
Had some life events happen this year and haven’t been able to manage the lawn like usual, and now dallis grass has basically grown all across my backyard. It’s grown seed heads and I’m sure it’ll spread everywhere next time I mow, making the problem worse…
Lawn was bermudagrass beforehand. I’ve read that it’s pretty dang resilient against glyphosate.
The tentative plan is to lay down some preemergent to stop any more dallisgrass from growing, and then spray the shite out of my lawn with roundup, then mow a few days later. From what I’ve read, the bermudagrass should bounce back in time.
Is this a terrible idea? Am I setting myself up for failure?

Dug up overgrown flowerbed. Next steps?
Posted by thatoneguy on 9/24/24 at 2:43 pm
Finally got around to digging up a flowerbed that the previous owners let go wild. I sprayed roundup a few weeks ago to let everything die, and I removed all foliage and dug up to disturb ~4 inches of topsoil all around.
The area is pretty shady and only gets direct sun for ~1 hour before sunset so I’m unsure how successful my venture will be. Any advice to get this growing well?
Live in BR area and unsure about my grass type too. Images linked below:

Are y'all in the BR area? And if so who do you use? I agree that I'm fine being out $20/month for added peace of mind. I think I'm definitely getting hosed on the price though and added repair costs.

Correct. We’re looking at switching away from them and I wasn’t sure if I should get a PM program with a new company. Results seem to be mixed, but I think it may be worth it. Sounds like I’m definitely overpaying now though with one hour
Preventative Maintenance HVAC programs - ripoff or worth it?
Posted by thatoneguy on 8/28/24 at 3:55 pm
I just figured it was the norm for people to have PM programs on their HVAC, and recently found out that most of my family doesn't. Our program is $35 a month and includes twice yearly cleaning, summer and winter.
Includes other sales BS like "priority" customer service, 10% discount on repair materials...
We've still had two repairs needed for relatively new units in the past year. $300 for a capacitor on one unit, $250 for compressor on another.
Am I getting ripped off? Do y'all just do service calls when the units stop working?

re: Dropping in attic identification

Droppings are maybe ~1/4 of an inch. Bigger than a grain of rice - maybe more like a piece of orzo? I have seen some skinks around the yard when mowing so I wouldn't be surprised if that's it.
How worried do I need to be worried about this? Obviously i'd like to avoid droppings in my attic.

Dropping in attic identification
Posted by thatoneguy on 8/12/24 at 11:44 am
Hi all,
I’ve got some droppings I found in the attic, but it doesn’t appear to be rats. Google searches suggest it may be lizards. Anyone have an idea of what kind?
If it is lizards, what kind and how to I DIY pest control? I’ve never heard of a lizard infestation in an attic.

re: Madison, WI Food recommendations?

Thanks! Guess I should’ve specified - it’ll be on the east side, somewhat near the Olbrich botanical gardens. I’m good driving to the downtown area or near campus though if there’s better options.
Madison, WI Food recommendations?
Posted by thatoneguy on 8/1/24 at 11:37 am
Hi all,
I’ll be traveling to Madison, WI in a few weeks. I’ll really only have one night free there and am looking for a good restaurant. Nothing fine dining - my meal budget is usually ~$20-30. What’s something good I can get in that price range?

Luckily we have St. Aug in the front yard, so no need to worry about that. Will keep that in mind for the back yard though when we redo it

I read some things that said they don’t recommend weed barriers under mulch as it can impede oxygen flow and stupidly listened. Even with a 4-inch layer, multiple weeds are popping through.
Would preemergent hurt my bushes? I only put down a few young azaleas, nothing else. I’d rather not rip up the mulch and restart if I can avoid it.

I don't know how it is now, but we used to stay there pretty frequently 4+ years ago. The rooms, pool, and spa are all nice. Any time we wanted a big gambling night though, we'd walk down to the Beau since it's larger and had better games.

You guys have any seasons relatively recent that were exciting.
If you mean from the modern era of survivor (which I kind of consider "modern" to be anything on Fiji), check out season 37 David vs. Goliath
If you're fine going with older classic seasons, season 7 Pearl Islands and season 18 Tocantins are my personal favorites.

Buffalo chicken dip, jalapeno bacon pinwheels. Unsure about the rest, but possibly some sliders as well.

Nice, that was me inquiring about it a few months ago - glad it worked out for you! We have entergy and I haven't gotten around to signing up for it yet. Looks like I need to bump that up on the priority list.

This is pretty much the recipe I use, except no mustard powder and I like to add thyme. I'd also recommend doing double the onions, and also browning the sausage beforehand.

Thanks, I was considering Rouj Creole also. We've been there before with the kids and enjoyed it, so we'll probably wind up back there.
Soji for birthday dinner w/ young kids
Posted by thatoneguy on 9/8/23 at 1:07 pm
Hi all,
I've heard great things about Soji and want to go there for my birthday dinner. We have two young kids around 1 and 3 years old. Would it be okay to go there, or should I look somewhere else? I don't see a kid's menu or anything, so that's giving me hesitation.

Get into sunflower seeds for snacking. Chinook is my current favorite brand since they don't have 3000% of your daily sodium intake in one bag
