Gov. John Bel Edwards and Amtrak Chief Executive Officer Stephen Gardner joined other officials to sign a service development agreement that will advance the return of intercity passenger rail service between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, the governor’s office announced today.
According to the agreement, passenger service could start as early as 2027.
The route, which has yet to be named, is planned to have the following stops:
Baton Rouge Downtown
Baton Rouge South
Gonzales
LaPlace
New Orleans Int’l Airport
Jefferson Parish (TBD)
New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal

The planned route is scheduled to take 75-90 minutes from start to finish. The initial plan is for one round trip daily, expanding to two round trips daily later, pending evaluation of operations and potential railroad improvement needs. Additional round trips could be introduced in the future.

One round trip daily won’t work for commuters. So this must be typical Amtrak service.
Wonder if Amtrak is trying to extend this from Baton Rouge to Shreveport and then onto Dallas.

With 7 stops? It seems like those alone would eat up almost that amount of time, not counting the actual travel time.

Does the ticket come with a complimentary Kevlar vest and helmet for the trip?

If I lived in BR I would still rather drive to MSY.

So now the thugs will have moving targets to shoot at through the windows.

Live look at the people looking forward to being regular users of this rail line.

I must have missed where it said how much the state will be paying for this.

You're looking at probably 5 minutes or less per stop. I guess they are banking on this being mostly business commuters ready to hop on and off like a subway but with only 1 train per day you'd have more people trying to get on. Unless they don't think it'll be used much.

JBE going out of office and this gets signed.
100% he is a "consultant" or holds some job with this deal within a year.
Just be honest, get LSP to come stick a gun in my face and take my wallet. Quit stealing from me behind my back.

didnt they do this like 8 times already?
create a plan, get rich on the "study" to do it, then decide to not do it after millions of taxpayer money has been stolen

Ya, Amtrak on-time stats are abysmal.

Both prospective passengers are thrilled about this…

Less than that if few are getting on/off. Likely will check tickets on the train to speed up the process.
Let's hear the times to see if this has any hope of growing.

By car, that route takes 90 min with no traffic.
I don't see it going that fast. If it could, it could be a winner.

This should be a great economic driver!
Just a few questions
Will the stop in Downtown BR be just to the east or just to the west of where they gunned that college girl down waiting for a train crossing?
How exactly are you getting around once they drop you off at some random spot in Gonzales?
What percent of NO folks that get pumped in on the downtown train are going close a deal vs ending up rolled up in a carpet?
I've got other questions, but those are the starters that run through my head.

One round trip a day feels ineffective, but multiple trips (especially for LSU or Saints games) would be awesome.
