He did. He had more input into the PCing and gameplan too. That's why LSU is promoting him and why they like him around the program. Very good chance they're grooming him to be the future OC at LSU. On top of Max playing it's not a coincidence you saw the offense improve quite a bit.

I don’t have a problem believing that and kuddos to him. And I was actually ok with making the OC when I thought they were gonna do a lazy search and make a lazy hire. But this Peetz kids seems a better fit and I think should allow your OC to decide who his PGC is gonna be.

I never once saw it on camera. Maybe you can point an instance out but I never saw it and there damn sure wasn’t an occurrence as obvious as what Calloway was doing the last two games.

For the people saying there’s no way the new DC accepts just 3 coaches on defense consider this. At first we all thought Bo Davis was coming to be DL coach but there has been no action yet. Since O is a DL coach himself who is still very active in coaching those guys maybe the plan would be to have O be the DL coach with LaCouture also helping as a GA therefore giving whoever the next DC is another position coach wherever he needs it. I personally think we are just fine with 3 defensive coaches as I think we are better off with Raymond coaching both the corners and safeties like he did before Busch. The DBs seemed like they didn’t communicate well last year maybe that was part of it. This would allow Callaway and Mangus to both have on-field spots.

OC: Peetz
PGC: Mangus
QB/TE: Callaway
OL: Cregg
RB: Faulk
WR: Joseph

DC: Freeman (hopefully)
DL: O/LaCouture
LB: ?
DB: Raymond

ST: McMahon

Freeman is a linebackers coach.

But the added bodies isn’t necessarily due to coaching during practice. It’s about having another defensive minded recruiter as much as anything IMO. I’m sure there are plenty of coaches who think differently though

So the DC and head coach have a position to coach, but neither the OC nor PGC do?

That’s not going to happen.

At the risk of asking a stupid question - is there any particular reason, other than the prestige of the job, that the ST coordinator needs to be one of the 10 on-field coaches?

Don’t get me wrong, it seems like McMahon has done a good job. Though it’s hard to tell how much is coaching vs. just having great specialists, and our return game (particularly blocking on PR) hasn’t looked great.

But my real point is - what % of his job as ST coordinator actually requires him to be an on-field coach? How much of it is actual game day coaching of players on the sidelines? What recruiting privileges does he gain by being an on-field coach, and does it justify whatever you lose by not having another offensive or defensive guy?

I’m not trying to shite on McMahon by any means, just wondering what I’m missing.

It seems tight end coach and ST coach are expendable and the positions most schools do without. LSU uses a GA for tight ends.

Well being an analyst means he can technically have zero coaching contact with players.

Now that isn’t really enforced at all but I would suspect forgoing a SPC might raise some eyebrows with the higher powers.

It can be done by a GA, which is treated just like a coach.

You can have 3.

Remember the 2017 season where we went without a ST coach and the other position coaches split up special teams duties? Our special teams were terrible, we had a ton of penalties, and our kicker sucked. O brought on McMahon as an analyst mid season and then as a full time coach in 2018 because it was that bad.

So after a little digging, it appears that LSU is the only SECw team with a special teams coordinator who is, above all else, a true special teams coach.

Matt Brock at Mississippi State is probably the closest, but he coaches special teams and OLBs.

Next would be Jeff Banks at Bama, who has legit special teams bona fides but is also an ace recruiter.

Auburn has Larry Porter, who is apparently also the “tight ends and H-backs” (lol) coach. But we know that Porter was recruiter of the year twice at LSU.

The guy at Ole Miss was a DB coach prior to last year.

Arkansas has a recruiter as STC (Scott Fountain).

Texas A&M doesn’t even have a special teams coach listed.

Meanwhile, we have Greg McMahon who has spent the last 22 years coaching special teams, including an 11-year stint in the NFL. He only has 4 all-time commits listed on 247, 3 of whom are specialists.

Just makes me wonder if that’s an efficient use of our 10 on-field spots.

Yeah I’m definitely not disputing that our ST play is light years better than 2017. I am, however, questioning whether he could fill that role as a highly paid “analyst.” But as others have said, maybe that would raise too many eyebrows.

Some teams split the te and special teams to the same coach. Or some other position. In the past before 10 we had peveto as the olb/special team coordinator. So I could see moving McMahon to analyst and having say mangus as the te/special team coach. Or someone else like bringing back Decoster. But I don’t se a way to only have 3 defensive coaches to 6 on offense.

Larry Porter also did his damndest to burn the Memphis football program to the ground while he was there. I’m glad he never found his way back to LSU again after that.

If this happens what is Calloway's job that he was promoted too.
To another school probably. There’s no way he stays and takes a backseat to Mangus. I get the peetz hire but, Calloway should be the PGC.

Compare the 2 resumes, but O is going to get a Brady-like offense no matter what. It’s amazing the guy(Peetz) has been all over the NFL, yet was never trusted as a play caller. Mangus is just living off of his ties to Brady. Calloway done a damn good job getting two true freshmen quarterbacks ready to play in the SEC. There’s no way you’ll have all 3 as on-field coaches unless you put him as wrs coach and put Mickey somewhere else.

You must not remember our ST productivity before the NCAA added the 10th coaching spot. Our ST has vastly improved. I think our ST coach has done a great job, and that's saying a lot coming from me because I was not happy about the hire, I couldn't stand him when he was ST coach of the Saints.

Peetz is the real deal. I thought it was going to be Harrell or Grimes.

Peetz and Freeman will get offers, let’s just hope we land both.
