Then said guy doesn’t work out and you pay a huge buyout.

Do you offer the next guy a similar amount? Risking the same buyout situation again?

Or do you send the message that you don’t believe in the next guy as much as you did the guy you just fired?

I’d think you offer him a shorter deal with comparable or higher annual salary, maybe a 5 year deal or something that states after 2 years he’s eligible for an extension.

If I was dictator of all contracts I’d also tie in a winning percentage factor to the buy out. If you win 80% of your games and we want you fired, 100% salary barring you’re not fired for cause.

Between 60-80% you get 75%
40-60%, 50% of your salary
Less than 40% 10% of your salary.

Again, if I was dictator of all contracts.

This really answers the question.

Possibly also take a look at what other big schools are doing.

Jimbo and BK may be the final look at guarantees.

It’s crazy. Bk has a good chance to finish his 10 yr contract. But they might be the end of these buyouts.

I don’t see how they help the schools other than getting the guy to sign.

The rationale for guaranteed long term contracts is that it provides assurances to recruits about the likelihood that the coach will stay there.

But when you still end up firing the coach whenever you want, and kids are now transferring 2 or 3 times throughout their career anyways no matter who the coach is, do long term contracts really matter?

Instead of a contract that’s like $6M/year and a guaranteed 5 years, why not make it a one year contract at $8M? Much easier to budget around that than having the potential buyout situation, and if the coach is good he will have earned that $8M. If a coach would rather take $6M 5 year deal over a $8M one year deal, that shows they don’t believe in their chances of success.

Great question

Hypothetically of course, if I’ve been walking around grabbing my nuts telling everyone who will listen how much money I have, then yes I’m putting my money where my mouth is and I’m going get the best guy in America

There are only a handful of coaches that can command a deal like the one Jimbo got. And he got that deal because he was a national championship coach with a 78% win percentage at a P5 school. Brian Kelly got that because he's got 300 coaching wins. Nick Saban gets that sort of money because he's a pretty good coach with a few big wins to his name. Kirby Smart has earned it.

So I don't think TAMU has to pony up that sort of cash to the next guy unless it's someone with a pedigree that commands that sort of deal. That's not the market for every coach.

You also have to think about what it takes to pull someone away from a "set for life" type job. Kirby can coach at UGA for as long as he wants (given that he's fielding competitive teams and isn't getting the school in trouble). Kelly was going to be at ND for years as long as he was a 9+ win type of guy (8 out of 12 years). Saban could go 0-12 for 2 years and probably keep his job for one more. So in order to get a guy to leave a job like that, you have to set the market far beyond what the "average" salary is.

I’m not sure about what is guaranteed, but several contracts with enormous buyouts were negotiated/renegotiated after Kelly and Fisher.

Kirby Smart, Georgia, $92.5 million.
James Franklin, Penn State, $64.5 million
Dabo Swinney, Clemson, $64 million
Matt Rhule, Nebraska, $62 million

You pay market rate for the coach you want. Markets change. Jimbo Fisher, although he failed, was a national championship winning coach.

Is Jeff Traylor? Is Mike Elko?

Both have vastly less experience and accolades. It has nothing to do with whether you "believe in the next guy"

It's about the market. Nothing less. You are overthinking it, or being disingenuous.

You use common sense and say that a buyout will never be more than 1yr salary.

There are many first timers or only has little HC experience. Kansas, KSU, Mizzou, and others. It can be done and not have to win bunch of games early but get to rebuild the program. Texas A&M is easier than most other places that have a far less talented team.

One thing I have to give Mississippi credit for, their state law preventing these kinds of contracts is a best case scenario for schools in the state.

"We would love to give you a bigger deal but we can't."

I wish Texas would consider a law like that, but I have seen too many Texas fans giddy that A&M set such a high bar for buyouts as it gives them cover to do the same one day.
