Stop giving stupid, needless, extensions.

When Fisher was originally hired his contract was 10 years, $75M. The contract was set to expire following the 2027 season. Obviously, that worked out to $7.5M per year. That was a really big number in 2018. But when you look at the market now, $7.5M per year would put his pay equivalent to guys like Mike Gundy, Luke Fickell, Billy Napier, etc. today

Where A&M screwed up was giving him a ridiculous extension following the 2020 season. Basically, they gave him a new 10 year, $95M contract...after just THREE (3) YEARS of the original 10 year contract. Had they not stupidly given him the new contract following the 2020 season the buyout today would have been far less onerous. In fact, it probably would have allowed A&M to cut bait after last season.

If someone else was going to poach Jimbo following the 2020 season at a price tag of higher than $7.5M per season following decent, but by no means remarkable results, then call Jimbo's bluff. I bet no one was willing to actually pay that amount...no matter what Jimmy Sexton fed to the A&M brass.

LSU stupidly did the same thing following the 2019 championship. Was it reasonable to give O a slight raise and extension following a championship? Sure. But giving him a 6 year, $42M extension was unnecessary. Why? Because NO ONE ELSE IN AMERICA was going to give O that kind of money. Or, at least, no one else who could compete on the level of LSU.

In the original hire the coaches have all of the leverage. It's later on where the schools can lean on their leverage. Sometimes you get burned (Brian Kelly to LSU). But if BK doesn't win a NC at LSU, I suspect the folks at ND won't be terribly heartbroken they didn't try to match the $100M LSU was willing to pay...while LSU fans will be pissed they are stuck in a "Jimbo" situation with a HC they can't get rid of.
