Has any team had a legitimate shot at hiring him away from Bama? When he was at LSU, the NFL came calling every year.
He dipped his toe in the NFL waters and realized he couldn't coach the same way there like he does in CFB.
Texas, maybe, was the only shot of him leaving.

He was a done deal to Texas back about 10 years ago, then Mack Brown pitched a hissy fit and wouldn't step aside, so Dinky backed out on them. After the next season they shitcanned MB.

Yeah, I love how LSU fans, who can't even find Tuscaloosa on a map, have better sources than those of us with actual connections to the program.
They are hung up on 20 year old real estate deals in Red Stick. It is 2023.

It really wasn’t. Saban was involved in some bad real estate investments that didn’t pan out. He was in the hole like 5 million dollars. One was some mixed use development from his time at LSU the other was a spec house his wife built on Lake Burton. In order for him to ‘stay’ at Alabama boosters paid off this debt. The Saban’s were notoriously bad with money. That’s been fixed now with the car dealerships etc. but he used flirting with Texas to get that debt erased. I think the spec house eventually went to auction and sold for way less than they had in it.

We could say the same for every school who had the scoop on our coaching search a couple years ago lol
Every other fanbase just knew who were going after and who was offered, etc
Truly remarkable

Way more calls came to Nick than people know. West va wanted to talk very early in his tenure. Cleveland and the giants both came calling. Texas was on the table. The giants and longhorns were ready to offer him the world. Jerry jones had two conversations with him. These I know happened. I was told Syracuse, penn st, usc also but don’t those for sure. I’m sure there were more.

The story I've heard is more Saban had his people call them when Coughlin was fired, they were interested and talked a bit, then Miss Terry told Nick she wasn't leaving Alabama and that was that.

I heard after this year he was going to Colorado to coach the db's under coach prime. They do have that Aflac connection.

Believe what you want, but the Texas stuff was 100% real.
I've heard many insider interviews on it. A few years ago, Tom Hicks (billionaire former owner of the Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars and massive UT donor), gave an interview and towards the end the guy asked him if the Saban stuff was real.
He went in depth on how real it was, and he thought they had him. He said it was on the 10-yard line and what killed the deal was Saban is close with Mack Brown and when he found out Texas had given Mack a vote of confidence to come back and this would have totally blindsided him, he pulled out mad at the university for doing that to Mack and he didn't want to work for admin that would do that.

I've heard oil rights were part of that and yeah, they almost had him.

When I'm secretly thinking about leaving a job, the first people I consult and tell all of the details to are the people at my current job. The only thing I'm telling them after I've got another great offer in hand is I got another offer that's higher and that's all Saban's agent did. He got a new contract out of it.
He definitely didn't tell his now permanent employer how close he was to leaving them at the alter afterwards either.

Don't you know? He coached there twenty years ago for a few years so they know him far better than we do
Do you know him at all? Did he go to your house on Thanksgiving or something? Just another example of weird frick no-life Alabama fans trying to get into a contest over which fanbase “knows” some random guy who happens to coach football. Bizarre people
quote:
It's like I told a Texas guy I knew at the time who kept crowing about how if Texas wanted him, Texas would get him: Texas could spend more money on football than Alabama. Alabama will spend more money on football than Texas
Oh yea this is definitely true and rooted in reality. Not delusional at all

I think texas could have pulled him from Bama. Rumor is they were considering offering an unheard of 10 million/year but somehow it fell through.
Wouldve been money well spent.
