So the AD is willing to cut off it's nose to spite it's face............Wonderful idea.

I could somewhat understand having a stand off over this issue last season, but now it's just inexcusable.

Admins are not willing to pay buyout for a coordinator. Period.
It was the same thing last year and the buyout was 800k, now its 400k and they are still reluctant.
With LSU in the news once a week or so about budget cuts and 1/4 of its faculty told to find new jobs. One of the worst budget cuts in the country.
It'll be a disasterous PR move to pay 400K just to get rid of a coach when the 400k could be used to save the foreign language dept and 8 of its profs.
I'm all in favor of canning crowton, believe me, and I understand Athletics and Academics is seperate but it still would be a bad PR move. But then agian a 90 ranked offense improves to 30th ranked that probably brings in a few more million $'s

I thought the TAF could handle a coach's buyout?
Even so, I don't see how it really is PR to improve a business that brings in millions to the university.

Firing les for millions would generate some bad PR, doubt canning crowton would generate much of a ripple. Maybe 1 or 2 writers trying to get a little attention.

they'd write a few hack jobs, the rant would go crazy and we would call it a day. no big deal. can't see how that it is true or reasonable if true to hold off on firing Crowton for financial reasons.

Crowton is a bad college OC
Needs to go, asap.

This.
They were saying something like that Boise State kicked cost the university and the conference somewhere in the neighborhood of $4 million by shanking those two field goals. I'd imagine being LSU and the SEC, having a shitty OC could cost more than that.

quote:I can understand this to some degree, but LSU is one of few schools that does not use state funds to support the program. Actually, it gave over $1 M to the university last year (I can't remember the actual #, but I think it was about $3.2M).

Given that, how do you not spend the money to improve the program?

Are you serious? You are oversimplifying the relationship between the economics of making a decision to change a coach and that of academic budget cuts.
Financially speaking, LSU academics badly needs a winning football program. The LSU football program does not badly need a fully staffed foreign language department.
And do you think a coaches buyout comes from the same bucket that would pay for that foreign language department?

Like I said I'm fully aware of academics and athletics and how the money works.
If it was up to me, Crowton would have been gone last year paying him the 800k buyout.
But I also know some in the lsu administration. Since LSU's potential budget cuts has made national headlines, those in charge are very well aware a potential PR backlash saying LSU cares more about its football team than academics.
They also know that a thriving football team greatly benefits the academic side too.

National headlines? Half the people in America think LSU is in New Orleans.

And I can guarantee you people even in neighboring MS have not heard a dam thing about LSU's budget cuts/financial crisis.
And yes, we do have electricy, cable, and recently, running water...INSIDE!

Absolutely ridiculous if they are not allowing Miles to get rid of Crowton because of cost. Its even dumber if it's about concern of a PR backlash. If true it is only making Miles look like a stubborn idiot when his hands are tied.

Very lame argument. That's not the reason we won't hire a new OC if Crowton ultimately remains here.

Then we need to get rid of the people who are stopping Les & The process of getting rid of Gary Crowton.
Crowton=Chris Garrett / Quiter

Not true...the relationship is truly symbiotic....MANY athletes choose a school not only for winning championships but to get a degree
to think otherwise is foolish..

No....the buyout won't even come from the Athletic Department but from TAF and $400k is a drop in the bucket..

How much is Alleva's buyout? We need to rid ourselves of him too then.
You have to spend money to make money. Someone needs to drill that into Alleva's head.

Athletemed: It's not as if LSU is/ will be in a position not to offer an athlete a degree. And it's not as if a $400k buyout is going to change the academic standing of any school. And while I can believe football players consider degrees when they choose a school, very few actually say this. It's tradition, facilities, geography, coaching, chance of winning big, and prep for Pro. For blue chip athletes, where would "get a good degree" fall?

Alleva has already said all staff decisions are up to Miles.......I doubt Alleva will reject Miles if he decided to can Crowton
