Archer was horrible. He was the coach most of my college days. Terrible reasoning for hiring him. Todd Kinchen said that LSU could have hired the 3 stooges and they would have coached that 1987 team to 10 wins.

Dinardo was a solid hire at the time, got a 10-2 record his 2nd year.

There are at least 3 critical things a HC must do right: 1. close on elite recruits, 2. hire a good staff, 3. Inspire a winning culture.

Archer was terrible at #1 and #3. Curley was terrible at #2 and #3. And Dinardo ultimately failed at #2 as time went on.

Bo Rein would've been a Home Run Hire, but for tragedy.

So is Orgeron.

If it wasn’t for Dinardo we’d probably still be wearing purple jersies at home. The rule may have gotten changed eventually but he was the driving force to get it done first thing after he was hired.

I was listening to a scratchy WWL signal all the way in Memphis when Dinardo was hired. Buddy Delaberto (sp?) said that was the death of LSU football. I wonder what Buddy would say about LSU hiring Brian Kelly today.

It obviously didn't end well, but he did start locking down in-state recruiting again, and got things moving in the right direction for a few years. I'd argue he made the job more attractive to Saban.

This is accurate. There are people that I guess aren't old enough to remember when he got here that think he was just another Curley Hallman.

Dude got off the plane and went straight to Carencro and got us the most electric player the program had seen to that point or at least in the past 25 years if you want to count Casanova. Arguably the most important LSU recruit in the modern era.

I think he brought back the H-shaped goalposts too.

Les miles was doing well at Ok State so I can’t necessarily blame them for that hire. Hindsight is 20/20. LSU fans loved Les for a long time because he put some really great teams on the field. The game just passed him by and he refused to change.

---

I hated the hire when it happened. He was 16-16 in Big 12 play. He kept recruiting going well, but I don't remember who we could have hired back then.

I didn't hate it, and actually wanted him. It worked out okay.

The big names in December of 04 (Meyer, Weis--LOL) were already spoken for when we hired him, due to Saban not announcing his departure until Dec 25th ("Merry Christmas!!"). Miles was definitely the best available.

I'd grade the LSU coaches I can think of this way:

Saban - A+
Miles - B
Dietzel - B
Arnsparger - B-
Cholly Mac - C+
DiNardo - C
Archer - D
Hallman - F
Dr. Jekyl Orgeron - B-
Mr. Hide Orgeron - F

Gerry DiNardo never had a winning season as a head coach before LSU hired him.

And he never had one after we fired him.

Players loved playing for him. We was actually a good coach besides the every now and then dumb football decisions like clock management.

If he would have hired a young OC that brought a modern offense, he’d probably still be the coach. Stubbornness is what did him in. Saban adapted to the times…

The fricking way some people describe Miles tenure is annoying.

It's not easy to win anywhere and Orgeron has shown you how fast shite can go down the toilet.

Les Miles had an incredible career at LSU. Yes, it was time for a change and he was far far from perfect but 95% of the men that are head coaches would give their right nut to have the career of Les Miles.

shite, Brian Kelly will have a very difficult time matching the Miles success at LSU.

The early years in Miles tenure was some of the craziest and exciting times in LSU football. He traded blows with Saban, Meyer, and Spurrier consistently until Saban ripped his heart out in that championship game. He was never the same after that. I’ll never forget some of those clutch fake field goals or the multiple fourth down conversions in the Florida game to beat Tebow. It was definitely time to move on but there were some amazing moments under the Mad Hatter!

The Archer hire wasn't a head-scratcher. He had strong support of the assistant coaches and the players. LSU had three consecutive seasons under Bill Arnsparger, after quite a bit of volatility during the Stovall years and a number of years of stagnation under McClendon. The LSU administration wanted to maintain continuity because the program seemed to be heading in the right direction. It just didn't work out like everyone wanted, primarily because Archer didn't recruit very well. His coaching was actually decent, and he sustained some success, up until the time when his recruits started phasing into the team. That's went things started to slip. I wouldn't have promoted him, but I can see why the administration did.

When Dinardo got Faulk to sign at LSU, that really got the ball rolling into what I call the new age of Tiger football. Lsu was losing HS prospects that were going out of state. Warrick Dunn, was a prime example
