I am stunned, when I look back at the LSU head coach hires, at how awful these hires were. I know, Les Miles had a great career at LSU, but I think LSU made Les Miles, not the other way around.

LSU hired Gerry Dinardo away from Vanderbilt.

LSU hired Les Miles away from Oklahoma State.

LSU hired Ed Orgeron as their head coach!!! What the frick??Frick!!!

LSU hired Mike Archer into his first head coaching gig. He has never been the head coach of anything since.

I could go on...

I don't know why they have struggled to bring in a good coach, but somehow they have managed several National Championships.

I think Brian Kelly is about to start a dynasty. If LSU can couple great coaching with the players they get, they can dominate. Even in the best conference in the country.

Dinardo was a good hire.

Archer is the only true head-scratcher on that list.

In his post he listed: Dinardo, Miles, Orgeron, and Mike Archer. I see two championships there. You see a third? If you're going to call someone a rimrod don't be an idiot.

Les miles was doing well at Ok State so I can’t necessarily blame them for that hire. Hindsight is 20/20. LSU fans loved Les for a long time because he put some really great teams on the field. The game just passed him by and he refused to change.

Considering the state of the program at the time, it wasn't that awful of a hire.

It obviously didn't end well, but he did start locking down in-state recruiting again, and got things moving in the right direction for a few years. I'd argue he made the job more attractive to Saban.

It was a good hire at the time. He brought the energy back to the program that had been missing for several years.

Won a natty and a couple of SEC championships. I was happy he was shown the door, but it wasn't an "awful" hire.

He won a natty, but I agree. I still feel my heartbeat get going thinking about the day he was announced.

This was a bad hire b/c they let the players pick the coach.

This is the beauty of LSU. Saban is the ONLY coach that didn't peak while at LSU. Miles, Dinardo, Archer, Hallman, Orgeron, etc all prove that LSU is a great place to coach b/c LSU elevated them to levels they couldn't acheive anywhere else. That is why the Kelly hire is so damn exciting.

I hated the hire when it happened. He was 16-16 in Big 12 play. He kept recruiting going well, but I don't remember who we could have hired back then.

two, not three.
And that's kind of his point. If those retards can win there, imagine what Brian Kelly can do

Saban won a title, and put LSU back on the map, but Dinardo was the one that made LSU appealing to Saban. Dinardo, IMO, was THE hire that made LSU what it is today. If they screw the pooch on that hire, the fence around the state doesn't start getting built. Sure, maybe LSU wouldn't have stayed irrelevant forever, but it wouldn't be the monster it is today.

ETA: TL;DR, he brought back the magic. Hopefully Kelly does the same. It hasn't felt the same since about 08-09. Maybe it never will for me, but here's hoping.

Neither of these guys were bad hires for the time. They were both overachieving at historically awful little brother schools. And before you start posting their records take a look at the records of the guys who preceded them at those schools.

And both of their tenures helped contribute to the status of the program today. Jerry ended like a ten year bowl drought and went to three in a row and even tied for the West title. Les won a natty and two SEC’s and played for one more of each.

Things didn’t end well for either of them but given where the program stood at the time they were hired both tenures had some real high points for the program, some real successes.

Archer could have been a good head coach. He just got the job far too young. If not for some terrible miscalculations in recruiting I think he still would have been successful.
