James Franklin would be a home run hire, but the Shags aren't smart enough to realize that.

I think Franklin would be an excellent hire. I'm wondering however if he is a big enough name YET for their liking, kinda what you seem to be alluding to...

Apparently, getting turned down by Saban made them even more delusional.

I know it's fun to mock Texas, but does anyone really think that Texas should just start their search with Tier B of coaching prospects? Sure, there is little chance of landing the guys named in the article, but wouldn't it be near negligence on the part of the AD not to at least gauge interest from the top guys?

If I were the AD, I'd do the same. I sure as hell wouldn't start my list at Franklin or some other B lister.

With the story unfolding as it has, the Longhorns might not be in a position to nab Nick Saban, but everything else on the table seems very possible

They couldn't get the biggest money chasing whore in the business but.....everything else on the table seems very possible

I think everybody is mocking Texas because they set the wheels in motion for Mack Brown to resign assuming that "Tier A" coaching prospects would be lined up down the block for the "best job in college football". Meanwhile, nobody in that class of coaches is showing any interest. frick Texas.

This, and not to mention the fact that their classification of "tier 1" candidate is downright fricking nuts while good, realistic candidates won't be deemed home run.

I really don't see an issue with them trying. But it's just not being handled in a professional way. Their pay sites are all pushing these names. They've already been publicly embarrassed as is but the new guy doesn't need the sort of stigma right off the bat that he was 7th choice. That can make even a pretty good hire come off flat.

Normally anyone with an ounce of sense would reign this in (and believe me, ADs have message control....stfu or stop getting access). The problem is no one even knows who has a job over there any more so the entire AD is leaking like tFlagship. They can't control the monster.

Texas could potentially pay as much or more than any of these guys. If you think that there isn't reciprocal interest, you're just not well informed. Here are the top salaries in the NFL. I'm not pretending to suggest that any of these guys are interested. But to assume that UT can't get a tier 1 coach, whatever that is, is somewhat moronic.

quote:

NFL: Payton, Patriots coach Bill Belichick ($7.5 million), Chiefs coach Andy Reid ($7.5 million), Seahawks coach Pete Carroll ($7 million), Rams coach Jeff Fisher ($7 million), Redskins coach Mike Shanahan ($7 million), Giants coach Tom Coughlin ($6.67 million) and Eagles coach Chip Kelly ($6.5 million).

Why would Texas want to touch either of these two, given their past transgressions?

I'm not saying that nobody is interested or that they can't get a tier 1 coach. They probably will. What I'm saying is that nobody is "showing any interest" at this time. What all of us here who aren't Texas fans are in agreement with is the arrogant way that UT, it's boosters and it's bloggers have handled this entire matter.

Jesus, at this point I don't know which would be funnier: Texas pulling a fast one and hiring Saban anyways, or Texas after all their huffing and puffing hiring somebody like Muschamp.

BOB would be just a good of a hire of those guys if not better
