If they really said those guys are on their list why not add Payton, Belichick, Reid

James Franklin would be a home run hire, but the Shags aren't smart enough to realize that.

I agree - and they could get him to Austin tomorrow instead of losing precious recruiting time chasing after these pie-in-the-sky hopefuls for three weeks.

If this is real it smacks of the stupid Madden playing fan hoping for Belichick etc.

How about getting a college guy that knows how to recruit/teach young guys?

FWIW I think the list coming out is a big smokescreen.

They have a list of big splash candidates. Opinions and denials will swirl for a few weeks. Reporters with inside sources might reveal that one of the big names is a "100% done deal."

All of this will happen, and I get the feeling they'll end up with someone like June Jones.

IMO, an AD should never publicize or publicly mention anyone on his list. Publicly he should say "national search, including current college and NFL coaches" and leave it at that. The more the search is done in the public eye the worse it will be and will only lead to people publicly asking for their name to be removed. Back channels are the best way to do a coaching search.

Out of all of them Jim Mora seems to make the most sense.

Don't see how McCarthy, Payton, or any other NFL HC who has a stud QB would leave their current positions for any college job.

Today’s NFL is more QB-centric than ever, and if you’re fortunate enough to have a great one, then you have a window of opportunity to win a Super Bowl(s).

Why voluntarily walk away from that scenario?

Because we're Texas. We're the Joneses and all the money that isn't up at the Vatican is here, of course.

No shite! Throw in Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy too. Could Texas be more arrogant? They got turned down by Saban who couldn't hack it in the NFL but think that successful NFL coaches like Harbaugh, Carroll or McCarthy would be interested?

I don't know if you've noticed, but they aren't very smart and they are very arrogant. Those combine + money = national public clown show. Sit back and laugh.

It is literally impossible to understate the arrogance and self importance of sips. I mean can you imagine if the best known website for your school put something like this out?

quote:

Gentlemen, prepare yourselves for the greatest coaching search of all-time

And just like that, everything about the Longhorn football program has changed.

With so many thoughts running through my mind, the first dominant one is that everyone needs to buckle up because the moment of truth is here.

We're about to witness one of the truly great college coaching searches in a generation.

For a decade, I've listened to rumors of top-level coaches foaming over the chance to take control of the Longhorn program and now we are going to see what the Joneses are truly capable of.

With the story unfolding as it has, the Longhorns might not be in a position to nab Nick Saban, but everything else on the table seems very possible and there's no reason why the Longhorns shouldn't exhaust every natural resource needed to ensure that the program secures a nuclear warhead.

If that means waiting until the BCS games are over to seriously ratchet up the interview process, so be it.

I don't the Longhorns should feel pressured to make any quick decisions in the coaching search and every step should be carefully taken so that none of the top candidates are spooked.

All that matters is getting it right and this is the Texas' chance to prove what everyone has always suggested about them.

Go be the Joneses. Settling is for punks. Go be the Joneses

Meanwhile, it's forever important that this sleeping giant is hugely gigantic at this very moment because of the man that is departing. There will be a lot of conversations about a lot of the layers of this story, but one of the bottom lines is that Mack Brown is a Hall of Fame coach and the greatest of the modern era in the Longhorn universe.

He'll always be that guy. And everyone should make sure to embrace a warm goodbye through the rest of this month because a rebuild of the Humpty Dumpty sideshow behind the scenes will make the open position even more attractive.

The spotlight is on The University of Texas. We're about to find out if what starts here truly changes the world.
