Santa's not the only one with a list.

New Longhorns athletic director Steve Patterson has a list of NFL coaches he's considering for Texas' vacant head coach position according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen said on "Sunday NFL Countdown", via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Included on that list: 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, Seahawks and former USC coach Pete Carroll, Eagles and former Oregon coach Chip Kelly, and Packers coach Mike McCarthy. Before you the Longhorns get too excited, Mortensen said, "There is no indication however that interest from NFL coaches on the Texas list will be reciprocated yet."

Harbaugh has already indicated to 49ers management that he intends to stay with the team. The most interesting selection might be McCarthy.

According to Mortensen, McCarthy has a home in Lake Travis, near Austin.

McCarthy hasn't been involved in the college game since 1993, when he was a wide receivers coach for the University of Pittsburgh.

Is Mortensen a rantard?

I think his show cause was "only" like 1.5 years, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.

However, he was on record just last week talking about the differences in coaching in the NFL and college and basically said he likes the NFL better because the offseason is less hectic and he doesn't have to recruit.

Doesn't that come back in full if he comes back to the college game?

Not sure, but I don't think so.

I think show causes start on the date they're levied, and talking heads were basically poo-pooing his as a non-penalty since he'd already signed with the Eagles when it was handed down anyway.

If he came back to college, he'd have X number of months left (maybe 6?) if he were to be hired in January.

I just can't see McCarthy on the recruiting trail. That shipped sailed in '93.

I don't see why any NFL coach would come back unless he either had to or an obscene amount of money was involved.

Just not having to recruit high school kids would make all the difference by itself.

That's the most delusional name on the list.

Yeah, he's going to leave the best QB in the NFL in his prime to go to a college program.

Don't know why Chip Kelly keeps showing up on these lists. Are reporters that ill-informed?

Though he would be a beast if given those kind of resources at Texas. Maybe they'll wait for him.

James Franklin would be a home run hire, but the Shags aren't smart enough to realize that.

I can't see them getting somebody old and needing to do this again in a few years.
