Auburn, a program that has played for 2 ncs and won one since 2010 had to hire harsin and got turned down by this guy. Maybe there are other factors going on people don’t want to admit. I hope I’m wrong, but it is what it is.

Napier will be a whale once he lands the right job. This could be it.

Napier is def in my top 2 along with Fickell. All business approach guy that’s been a winner and had success everywhere he’s been.

Napier is not a splash hire.
Woodward makes splash hires.
This board would save itself some crying if it moved on from Napier.

I wouldn't be mad by his hire at all. I just don't think he's at the top of the list for LSU. There's proven winners you can go after and then if you whiff, you look at a guy like Napier. The program isn't in a position to take a massive risk on an unproven guy like Napier right now because we're sliding a thin line of ending up like USC/Tenn/Michigan who can't seem to reclaim their previous success. In other words, this is the most important hire in program history right now due to the damage O and Miles put at the end of their tenures.

Saban tree guys do not do well. That's a fact. It simply is. Not much success there. I don't really want to hear about how this guy is so much like Saban. Nobody is like Saban, I'm sorry. O already hammered us with his own obsession with his 2019 team and not moving past it. Instead, he kept trying to do the same thing which probably limited him because he clearly isn't a schemer. I think Napier is a very good coach personally but it also scares me a bit people seem to get so cuddly with a guy who does everything like Saban. That kind of obsession to try to reclaim your past glory is dangerous because it blinds you.

There's a lot of coaches off Saban's tree who learned many things from him and tried to copy him only to end up being complete failures. The vast majority are failures. Great minds typically have great coaching trees but Saban's is the complete opposite. Anyone ever stopped to think why?

This concerns me. Napier may just be the best man for the job, but this cult that's building around him is odd.

This is asinine. His resume’ is much better than O’s. He’s from Cookeville, TN. He’s not a Louisianan.

The “cult” are just people enamored with what he’s accomplished thus far, not that he’s “one of us”.

It’s entirely different.

And link to him being in discussion at VT and USC?

So an Athlon link that lists 14 guys USC "should inquire about". That doesn't really equate to him being one of their candidates.

List includes PJ Fleck, Tony Elliott, Brent Brennan, and Jeff Hafley. You guys would be happy with them too, right?

along with his production as a hfc, him waiting on a job he really wants is what makes it interesting.

the man has passed on more than doubling his current salary at least twice so far.

Just ignore the 3 SEC jobs he turned down. The links were in response to the sentiment that no one else wants or has heard of him & is only on LSU’s radar because ULL.

Also, all I said was “in the mix of conversations now about VT & USC”. Probably will be more schools as the season progresses because y’all don’t notice but this happens every year with him.

There’s a 100% chance the guy is not finishing his HC career at ULL whether he goes to LSU or not.

he spent those years as a WR coach at any school other than Alabama he probably isn’t even on the list.

Obviously, but that's a silly hypothetical because he is the coach he is because he saw Dabo build up Clemson culture from nothing for a few years and then studied the "process" for a few years with Saban. It's not like coaching for Saban just gives you an instant career boost because you coached for Saban. I'm willing to bet you don't know who Burton Burns or Doug Nussmeier (besides as Nuss' dad) are despite them both being Saban assistants. Burton Burns was even a very long time assistant.

Auburn is low key a horrific job. Gus got fired because Kevin Steele thought that he could steal the headcoaching job by bribing their TAF equivalent with access to the locker room after games. That's their booster situation, but that's not really the point. The point is that Napier is probably the third hottest young coach in the country with an argument to be made for second. Only Fickell and Franklin are hotter names, and both are pretty likely to never end up in the SEC (again). Getting Napier isn't settling.

Edit: And to stop spamming the thread, Saban tree not working well is just a myth. Like every other tree there have been some misses with some given plenty of chances, but off the top of my head Jimbo, Kirby, Dantonio, and Cristobal have had major success. Kiffin and Sark have had moderate success. That's actually a really high hit rate.

The way I see it when it comes to Napier, coaches the likes of Orgeron and Miles won NCs at LSU. Imagine what an actual COACH can do there, and Napier is a great one in every sense of the word.

LSU doesn't require someone from a bigtime program making $10 million a year to be successful, just a coach with a brain that knows how to build and prepare a team
