A group of 36,000 people have signed a petition asking that LSU release Mike VII and stop having live mascots. The petition was started by California-based social media operation Care2 and has a goal of 40,000 signatures.

Here is what they had to say:

Please sign this petition if you believe animals should be free, not held captive to be used as mascots.

Mike VII isn't the first tiger mascot LSU has used. In fact, he's the seventh tiger — hence the name. His predecessor died last year from terminal cancer after living his last years confined in a limited space only to be allowed outside for display at football games.

While the university has made efforts to improve the quality of the tiger's enclosure, increasing its size and adding a variety of outdoor activities, it is cruel to sentence a tiger to such captivity. Animals are not here for our amusement.

LSU media relations director Ernie Ballard III responded to the petition with the following email, according to The Advocate:

But LSU did respond through Ernie Ballard III, LSU media relations director, who wrote Wednesday in an email: “The university does not support the for-profit breeding of tigers. By providing a home for a tiger that needs one, LSU hopes to raise awareness about the problem of irresponsible breeding and the plight of tigers kept illegally and/or inappropriately in captivity in the U.S.”

See this his how liberal idiots spin shite to make it fit their agenda. How many of the idiots that signed this petition know that the "enclosure" is 15,000 square feet, has it's on river that empties into a lake, has parts that are a jungle like environment with shade all over for him to lay in and has temperature controlled boulders for Mike to lay on in the summer without getting hot and in the winter without getting cold? And, has a night house with AC with veterinary care 24/7. How many of them know that Mike himself is a rescue? How many of them know that Mike VI's cancer was discovered by one of his handlers and that he immediately received world class care including Stereotactic Radiation therapy, the first Tiger in the world to receive such care and that Mike VI lived his life in the same Tiger Habitat that Mike VII is in now? Ignorance is bliss. So to all of you simpletons that signed this petition because you are led around the nose by your emotions and misinformation go screw yourselves and go try getting informed.

Mike lives in a 15,000 square foot paradise with all the amenities he could ask for. He’s cool the summer and warm in the winter. He’s got a river that flows into a lake, boulders to relax on, and a jungle atmosphere to make him feel right at home. He gets all the toys he wants, love and attention from visitors. He has an entire staff at his disposal to provide him with the best care in the world. And when he sits down to eat his meals consisting of a quality of meat that some humans can’t afford he can do it lakeside, under a shade tree, or in a climate controlled chill zone. Trust me California animal liberators, Mike don’t want you messing with the deal he’s got.

I have to assume most people who sign this petition are kind hearted, but extremely short-sighted. It sounds great to say "let's free Mike"...but where and how? He was born in captivity and could not survive in the wild. In addition, the conditions at the shelter where he was born are far inferior to where he is now. I'm begging anyone thinking about signing this petition to THINK about what the next steps would be for "freeing" him. If you do that I think most rational people will come to the same conclusion I have in that he's in the best place he could possibly be.

To the wild, where he will likely be poached for some ridiculous superstition and where the habitat is being destroyed by irresponsible farming for Palm oil and such, so the tigers already there are dying out?
