A group of 36,000 people have signed a petition asking that LSU release Mike VII and stop having live mascots. The petition was started by California-based social media operation Care2 and has a goal of 40,000 signatures.

Here is what they had to say:
quote:

Please sign this petition if you believe animals should be free, not held captive to be used as mascots.

Mike VII isn't the first tiger mascot LSU has used. In fact, he's the seventh tiger — hence the name. His predecessor died last year from terminal cancer after living his last years confined in a limited space only to be allowed outside for display at football games.

While the university has made efforts to improve the quality of the tiger's enclosure, increasing its size and adding a variety of outdoor activities, it is cruel to sentence a tiger to such captivity. Animals are not here for our amusement.
LSU media relations director Ernie Ballard III responded to the petition with the following email, according to The Advocate:
quote:

But LSU did respond through Ernie Ballard III, LSU media relations director, who wrote Wednesday in an email: “The university does not support the for-profit breeding of tigers. By providing a home for a tiger that needs one, LSU hopes to raise awareness about the problem of irresponsible breeding and the plight of tigers kept illegally and/or inappropriately in captivity in the U.S.”

“confined in a limited space only to be allowed outside for display at football games.” Shocked they didn’t care to get their facts straight before posting this.

Here’s a thought, quit worrying so much about animals that would rip your throat out and get a job.

Mike is better off in his own space. Maybe we should get him a playmate, maybe them hippies will like that, ya know the sexual revolution started out there in la-la land.

In related news.. 100,000 people with a brain show up to football games each Saturday and support the fact LSU has taken a Tiger from captivity to care for and help teach those who want to care for animals.

Great Quote from the well educated petitioners “Do we really need more examples of American lack of care for each other and animals. Having an imprisoned tiger who will later be killed and sold for parts does not mean your male students are Tarzan or have big parts. They should show their own courage by winning their games, helping their community and frankly being real men whose God given task is to use their strength to protect the weak and innocent. If you must have a mascot, buy a stuffed toy .”

What idiots! Mike has the best habitat outside of a wild tiger. Do they want to place him in a jungle so he dies immediately?

Dude that tiger has a freaking multi million dollar habitat and dines on fresh red meat for every meal....quite literally he may be the most pampered and we'll treated tiger in the world....meanwhile these idiots would rather him be out in the wild where all types of tiger species are damn near extinct because of rampant illegal poaching to get their furs.... basically this group in all reality wants to put this tiger in more danger of death and they don't even get it. Absolutely moronic.

Very well said.

"California based" this explains everything. This tiger is treated like a king as a team of veterinarians the best house to live in any animal could ever ask for, and all these people want to do is say put him back out in the wild. 1 he has no survival skills he's never been in a wild. 2 he was a rescue and he is in a much better situation here than he would be in the wild or any Zoo

“Petition” lol. Yeah 40k liberals mean so much more than the donors stroking checks. frick them. Mike is the first cat to ever get chemo. He’s treated like a king and was saved from a rescue. He would have died in the wild.
