Head coach Brian Kelly has awarded No. 7 to offensive tackle Will Campbell.

In his announcement, coach Kelly said that LSU wants "to build upon the tradition of No. 7 and award it to the best player from the state of Louisiana."

Campbell (No. 66) will wear a No. 7 patch for the Tigers this season.

As a hs lineman & a retired line coach in hs there is no one other than the Quarterback than the left tackle. Campbell is on his way as the greatest offensive lineman in LSU history.

Coach Kelly gave it to Campbell because he thought he was the best choice for this team.

I love this pick by BK. I'm also loving the melt of folks crying "don't mess with our tradition" from the same people that wanted to end this tradition altogether. WC might not touch the ball, but make no mistake he is as much a game breaker and playmaker as anyone else else out there.

People are so mad that number 7 isn’t a RB, WR, or DB. Number 7 has been the playmaker and the game changer. Coaches must believe Will is the guy that doesn’t miss a block when it really counts. The guy who doesn’t quit on the play and knocks down two defenders. We’ve all seen those blocks down field that made the touchdown run. Also understand that BK is trying to establish an O-line that dominates the line of scrimmage. Something we haven’t had in a long time. I believe in BK and that this is a good move. I’ll take Will over Giles any day.

I’ve always considered 7 to be the playmaker, flying around the field, skill guy. Go figure.

You know Frank Wilson informed BK that #7 wasn't only for LA guys. Don't ya think?

So why did BK just change our tradition? Is he just thinking about short term recruiting the next couple of cycles?

Also, #7 is for a play maker, a game changer, a show stopper. I've agreed with BK on most all he's done, but this is just flat out a head scratcher...nothing against Will.

I was one of the guys thinking, had its time and looked great on the LSU STUDS all those years but it's time needed an ending.
Then video hits with lineman Will Campbell gets the #7. I'm back in now. Best player to be able to bring back that swag.

Stupid. Supposed to be given to a skill guy of worthy. 7 should have been hung up this year.

This is dumb. 7 is for the best playmakers. Not best from Louisiana. Pat Pete wasn’t from Louisiana. 7 on a LT looks dumb af

7 should be a true leader. I think Big Will can fill that role

Silent kid that lets his play do the talking. When he buttons that chin strap his entire demeanor changes and he becomes nasty just like you want out of the OL. When Heard makes his debut it’s going to be fun to watch Campbell, Jones and Heard open holes for our stable of RBs.

Number 7 isn't a thing for the OL. It is for playmakers. I am from Monroe and my kids went to Neville and This kid is great. But 7 is not an OL number. 18 is the leader number he should have offensive 18.

"Build on the tradition of best Louisiana Player" Didn't Patrick Peterson start the number 7 tradition?
