During Joel Klatt's show this week, the Fox Sports analyst identified a handful of College Football coaches who are facing pressure heading into the 2025 season.

One of those coaches was LSU's Brian Kelly, who Klatt placed in the "It's Time" category of his pressure index.

While discussing Kelly, Klatt points to the season opener vs. Clemson as a "can't lose" game for the Tigers. Per On3:
quote:

“Kelly needs a great start to the season and that’s exactly where the pressure point is. It’s time. Week 1, at Clemson,” said Klatt. “The opener at Clemson is the moment for Brian Kelly. He can’t lose that game and that’s an incredibly tough game. I actually think Clemson is a little bit better than LSU. So now we’re expecting him to take a team on the road, and go beat Dabo Swinney, who’s won a national championship, and Cade Klubnik, who has played a lot of football and just went to the College Football Playoff, and he’s got to win that game.”

“The Clemson game becomes massively important, plus we all think that Clemson is going to be the class of the ACC. If they’re in fact the ACC Champion, and you can notch a win in their building, what would that do to your playoff resumé? It would be pretty good! It would be pretty good,” said Klatt. “That’s why this is such an important game.”

“If he doesn’t, look up at the rest of the schedule. The rest of the schedule becomes so much more daunting, okay. The Clemson game is really the crux of the argument because now you look up and you still have Florida, that one at home, you still have to go to Ole Miss, you still have to play LaNorris Sellers and South Carolina, you still have to play Texas A&M, you still have to go on the road and go to Alabama, you still have to go on the road and play in Norman,” Klatt said. “Now, imagine for a moment, he loses that opener. Well, it’s a really good team and they’re on the road, and it’s early and, you know, you can say all the things about like, hey, you know what, it’s fine. I just don’t know if there’s going to be enough margin with those six games that I threw up on the board. The SEC is incredibly deep. They haven’t had the national championships in the last couple of years but that doesn’t mean that they’re any less deep. Those are tough games. They’d have to go 6-2 minimum just to be a 9-3 team and potentially make the playoff, and those are really tough t go 6-2 through that.”

He isnt wrong. LSU has not won an opener since my daughter was starting 9th grade. She is about to be a Sophomore in College now...

So yeh that is basically a must win game for Kelly in my eyes.

Can't argue with any of this. While it's only week 1, the Clemson game makes all the difference for this team momentum wise

No shite. Captain obvious, Klatt. He remains one of the dumbest football analysts out there.

Well, Joe went out on a limb with this one. Lots of insight here.

Clemson has a very good DLine. If Nuss turns the ball over, which he does, LSU losses. Hopefully, we don't see him putting his hand on his helmet with that what just happened look.

We are good at wanting to fire coaches, and I have no problem with firing a bad coach. However, you better have a better replacement or you defeat your purpose. Who is better than BK and willing to come here right now??????

Literally, any coach in America would jump at the chance to be at LSU. I am pulling for BK, but I think LSU is destined to be a perennial 9-3, 8-4. They may have one year where they are 10-2 or 11-1. But I see mediocrity moving forward.

If we are being honest our program is not as desirable as it was 10 years ago due to NIL/portal and our relative lack of resources compared to the very top. CBK has done a very good job of getting us out of the mess that Coach O left

In this era, the top 5 programs IMO are OSU, Texas, UGA, Michigan, USC. They all have comparable local recruiting grounds, but a boatload more money. I think our program is more similar to the next tier of Oregon, Alabama, Notre Dame, and Penn St.

If we got rid of CBK, Im not sure the options available would be worth the risk. Kiffin for instance is no sure upgrade, but would he want to move on from a program he has built, where the fanbase loves him if he wins 9 games, to go to a program where if he wins 9 they tell him he is on the hot seat and he better not lose again?

Have to break the trend.

The SEC schedule along with OOC opponents has become such a high hurdle when compared to other conferences. LSU would never be in the shadow in any other conference in America. Coach has an extremely tall order in front of him.

It is about which QB plays better.

I'm sorry Joel, but the guy that has a 1 or 2 ranked recruiting class or even a 5 or 6 , is not on a hot seat.
Lose 4 or 5 games with that roster , then you move into hot seat territory. The Tiger HC is always on the hotseat with 10 or 15% of the fans. Most of us are pretty realistic. We know the SEC is a tough place to win.
Coach should be able to win 9 or 10+ with this roster. It looks like the best group he's had so far. If he loses to Clemson - not a big deal. They look like a pretty good team - maybe a 1 or 2. I don't think we are a 1 or 2. Should be the best game of the year.

Now compare Texas opener and SEC schedule and they are picked #1 in SEC with a new QB:

at Ohio State
at Florida
vs. Oklahoma (Dallas)
at Kentucky
at Mississippi State
VANDERBILT
Georgia
ARKANSAS
TEXAS A&M

Arch Manning had like a 19.5 Passer Rating vs teams above a 3-9 or 4-8 record. Had 12 players drafted. 8-4 is my guess for them. Definite losses at OSU, at UGA, and at Florida.

With that schedule they should be picked #1 in the conference

The most important game is the next one. Gene Stallings was once asked how you get a team up for La Tech when you have a big game with UT next week. Stallings replied, lose the game to LaTach and see how "small" it was.

Derp, derp, water is wet. Blind hog Kelly gonna blow Klatt's pre-season bullshite out of the water.

For once I agree with him. If CBK loses to Clemson, the door gets unlocked for an exit if the season spirals out of control. Lets not forget the pressure is also on Baker and Sloan. We have tons of talent, but can they coach them up and get the maximum talents they have on the field. This is put up or shut year for CBK and he feels the pressure I'm sure. Tiger fans expect championships. GEAUX TIGERS!

Baker will do his job and do it well.

Klatt is completely upside down on this. This is a non-sec early game, a loss to this highly rated Clemson team is not a must-win for Kelly. Getting to the playoffs is a must for this LSU team and Kelly who put up the monies to be an elite team.

Uh yeah but losing to Clemson sure makes it harder to reach the playoffs

“Can’t loose” is a bunch of BS. I agree that this is a critical game from a fanbase perception standpoint however, if we lose the first game and go on to do well the rest of the season, there will not be a problem.
user avatar
No. We can't lose this game. Simply cannot.

Playoff and Heisman elimination to start the season. BK needs to stop his excuses and blaming everybody else.

So LSU, as a 12-1 SEC Champ, gets left out of the playoffs?

Dumb take… completely. A game 1 loss is just that, one game, early in the season. LSU could lose a 2nd game in conference and go to SEC championship and/or make the playoffs.
