Travel Pet Peeves

We all have pet peeves when traveling whether it's slow drivers, slow walkers, too many tourists in one area, airline boarding processes, etc. What really grinds your gears when traveling?
My nomination- People who pick the window seat on a plane but keep the shade closed the entire flight. I can understand if the sun is glaring through the window and blinding you or your nearby passengers. What I can't understand is why you'd take the window seat, immediately shut the shade, and keep it closed for a flight of any length when it's beautiful weather, views, or if you want to make sure you take off/land safely. On two of the four flights I took last weekend, had no clue we were about to land and it caught everyone off guard.

I had to sit in the middle seat on a flight out of Gunnison, CO. Old guy sitting window, middle age attractive woman sitting aisle. They got into a fight because the old guy wouldn’t drop the shade and she couldn’t see her laptop screen because of the reflection. She called the stewardess over, but old guy held firm. She kept telling me “that guy is an a-hole”, but I found it funny.

That situation, if I'm in the window and I see the sun glaring across, I'd lower the shade at least half way so at least I could still see out but the laptop owner can still get work done. Also would have suggested increasing the brightness on the computer so she could see better

Don't you know how important that lady is at her job? If she increases the brightness on her computer it's going to drain the battery faster & she'll get less work done. Then when the wheels immediately touch down, she'll have less to report on that important project she wants everyone around her to know she's working on. /s
Gate lice bother me. People putting their oversized carry-on in spaces that aren't their seats. Especially when it's mine. And obviously the person behind me who kicks my chair & uses the headrest as a tool to pull themselves up. When that happens I immediately recline & it stays that way.

This!
My other pet peeve: People are phone zombies in the airport and on the plane. Which is almost everyone these days.
It is the easiest place in the world to strike up a conversation and instead people are mindlessly looking at TikTok.

Mine is people that are completely unprepared while traveling. This is most obviously exhibited when the plane pulls up to the gate and the fasten seatbelt sign is turned off.
Because then, and only then, is it appropriate for one to begin gathering their items out of the seatback in front of them, start looking around for where to put their empty coffee cup, start placing phone calls before their crap has even been put into their bag, etc.
As to the window shade, this is why I always select the window seat on domestic flights. Being able to look out the window helps me control flight anxiety.

Ditto. It feels like I’m in a cave or a funeral home on a plane when most of the windows are closed. When that happens, I turn the overhead light on because I’m usually reading and hope it annoys the window seat person

Do we really need 9 boarding zones to get everyone on the plane?
Posted on 10/10/26 at 7:51 pm to CuseTiger
The get window seat for extra room not for the window mostly. And the announcement we are about to land doesn’t give it away? You want window open pay for a window seat.i personal prefer the aisle so I pay for that.

Sometimes I take the window specifically so I can make sure it stays shut. Gets hot and bright if I'm trying to sleep. And I like having the wall to lay my head against

I do this if it's really bright out. But I like looking out the window and always take the window seat. I hate the aisle Because you get bumped all flight.

I hate when I get to my seat. The row is empty but the baggage over my seat is full because people who bought seats in the back put their bags in the front. I've never understood that. . Bag should have to go right above or below you

I often see people putting their carry on bags in the business/first class section, then walking towards their seat in the back. Flight attendants never say a word.

I wrote this after a recent flight:
quote:
You go to the airport because you booked a flight. You know you’re getting on a plane.
You go through security so that you can board a plane.
You stand in line to board a plane.
You watch the people in front of you board the plane…
…but you wait until you are standing at the jetway, holding up everyone behind you because only then do you think to get out your boarding pass.

For me, it is trying to take a vacation anywhere during the Chinese New Year.
This can absolutely ruin any vacation.

Thank you for reminding me. I've been based out of ATL and IAH. The FAs that do not instruct passengers deplaning to close the shades during the spring/summer do nothing but ensure the next crew and passengers bake until airborne.

Carry on luggage. I hate that everyone carries their suitcase on the plane these days. Wasn’t like that years ago. It delays the boarding/disembarking process by 30 minutes while people fight to shove their suitcase overhead.
Also boarding planes front to back seems completely stupid to me. Go back to front.

Zoned boarding was tested and still produced the same delays.
quote:
Back-to-front zones: Common. Divide the plane into zones (e.g., rows 10-20, then 21-30). It feels orderly and rewards early boarders with bin space, but creates the congestion described above.
Outside-in or WILMA (Window, Middle, Aisle): Board window seats first (across the plane or in sections), then middles, then aisles. This allows window passengers to settle while others pass less disruptively. It performs better but still faces issues with families and groups.
Random boarding (assigned seats but no strict order): Surprisingly efficient. Passengers spread out, reducing simultaneous stowing in one area. Southwest’s open seating is a variant that’s often fast but chaotic and unpopular for those wanting specific seats.
Steffen Method (or optimized variants): One of the theoretical winners. Passengers board in a precise sequence: window seats in alternating rows from the back (e.g., 12A, 10A, 8A...), then middles, then aisles in similar staggered fashion. Adjacent people in line sit two rows apart, enabling parallel stowing and minimal interference. Simulations show it can be twice as fast as back-to-front. Experimental tests with real people confirmed significant gains.

The rental car process at airports. Even being a member of their “inner circle club” sometimes you have to wait in the general public line for processing.
The customer service reps are sometimes lacking but the potential customers are what especially grind my gears. They are where the real issues lurk.
Lotsa stereotypes confirmed by eavesdropping on all the protected classes who ostensibly want to rent a car but seemingly have zero experience how the procedure works and are usually convinced that they are being screwed (possibly true but poor planning can be expensive).
And it really slows down the process.

Commerical flying sucks all around.
1. Inconsistent TSA requirements. Sometimes they make you take out laptops, sometimes not. Confused old men in front have no idea how to use the conveyer belt. I get a card handed to me. For what? It's all so bizarre.
2. Airport walkers just stopping in front of me for no reason with zero situation awareness that you slammed on the brakes right in front of me to spin around and look at a pretzel shop.
3. Airport train riders trying to get on the train before letting others off.
4. deplaning assholes trying to beat others off the plane from back of the plane.
5. Had a phillipino lady spray herself with perfume while deplaning and everyone got a whiff of her nasty arse perfume.
6. Trashy people in PJs, masks, emos, septum rings, and colored hair. you're fricking gross. stay away from me.
