The wife (no pics) and I are spending our honeymoon in the Keys next month. We will spend most of our time in Marathon with a day in Key West. She hates reptiles with a capital HATE. She's paranoid to the point of wanting to look elsewhere for the trip (even though damn near everything is booked). Has anyone been down there around Thanksgiving? I don't believe they're as bad as she's worried about.

THat's pretty ridiculous. They are not THAT bad. You'll see them if you take a boat through some of the channels and whatnot.

Also...why Marathon? I'd certainly want to be further down.

Tell her she's being irrational. Women love that shite.

They are pretty much everywhere in Key West. Personally, I don't mind them and certainly wouldn't change my vacation because of them, but if it is crazy fear, then you may want to consider changing. Also, supposedly when it get cold, they fall from trees in the Keys. A fun fact that was shared with us while we were there which I found to be hilarious...she may just have a heart attack if one fell on her while y'all were strolling down the street.

I was in Key West in April. We did see a few, but they weren't that bad. Most of the wildlife I saw running around were roosters, which are everywhere and can be heard cockledoodledoing from blocks away.

It's late in the year but this is now leading my vote for thread of the year.

In all seriousness, what is her concern. What dou you mean by "how bad"?

Is it seeing them? Them coming close to you? Attacks?

I'd say your interaction with them in terms of proximity is...you won't get as close to them as you would a squirrel unless you tried to feed one.

As far as the amount...you'll probably see more chickens in Key West than iguanas

It's not like they'll rush up to you as you're walking down Duval

They are everywhere in the mangroves lining the canals. They are skittish and won’t touch you.

Why Marathon? Best value on a resort.

How bad? Guess that question can be vague. I'm not deterred by them, but she will flip out at the sight of a gecko.

What is she worried about

We were in Islamorada and Key West earlier this year and I think I saw 2 or 3 the entire time we were there (5 days).

I took it as an overreaction.

But I had to ask around.

I went to Key West last March and honestly don't remember seeing any at all. Saw a good bit of roosters running around though.

Don't tell her this but there's a large gecko population as well.

Anywhere you go in the Caribbean you may run into them. They usually just sit and look at you.

frick's sake. They're the squirrels of the tropics. You will have zero real interaction with them.

Tasty in a pinch, to boot.

We were there (KW) in February 2022 for 3 nights and saw 1. We only saw it because a lady was shooing it away from her house and it ran onto the sidewalk and up a tree.

Like I said. I don't care. They don't worry me. It's her I'm concerned about.

This is the Moment. Now is the time. This is a honeymoon. If you let her irrational BS dictate a last minute change in plans and lets face it, a month away is last minute for a honeymoon, then you're setting a stage for a lifetime of putting up with it. Take the initiative and let her know gently that you're the one with the testicles in the relationship.

You see this? She doesn't belong on a pedestal does she? At best she belongs beside you. All that treat her like a princess stuff is hogwash.
