We stayed in Islamorada last November. We were at an older condo complex that had some grass and gardens, a big courtyard, and its own boat launch and little beach. There were Iguanas everywhere I'm sorry to report. We did, however spend 2 days in Key West and didn't see any.

Between the iguanas and the cold this is the most “my wife has never left her hometown” post ever.

Every person I know, male or female, loves Iguanas at resorts. She sounds insane.

Yeah Marathon sucks. You hardly see Iguanas in November. They like it much hotter than that.

Nobody stays in Marathon on purpose. There’s nothing there that you can’t find elsewhere in the Keys and there’s a lot less of everything you can find anywhere in the Keys. It’s basically Big Pine but with two additional strip malls.

We stayed at Isla Bella. We wanted to pick somewhere dead in the middle of the keys. Key West was too expensive. Plus Marathon had a good food selection outside of the resort. As far as the original post, we only saw one iguana.

Told the wife I was right. She didn’t like that.

Several weeks later, and this reply still makes me laugh.

I hadnt opened Travel Board in a while, opened today, saw this thread was updated and then saw this. I stand by my support of Iguanas.

THat's pretty ridiculous. They are not THAT bad. You'll see them if you take a boat through some of the channels and whatnot. Also...why Marathon? I'd certainly want to be further down.

Went there first week of November. They are not bad at all, saw some here and there. Stayed in Marathon at Tranquility Bay. Great place, great location would stay there again. From there you have quick access to all of the keys, upper and lower. We drove to Key West twice, just under an hour. The place we stayed at would have cost a fortune on Key West.

This is why we stayed at Isla Bella. Wasn’t a far drive from anywhere. Key West is really expensive.

but she will flip out at the sight of a gecko.

Why? She might end up saving on her car insurance.

We were planning a trip to the keys as well and looking at staying at Marathon for this reason. We are planning a fishing trip out of Islamodore. So will be close to there and Key West.

Overall, how was your trip? Where did you fly into?

Trip was great. Wife (no pics) and I enjoyed ourselves. Not a bad day of weather down there. Some showers in Key West but that wasn’t an issue. We just wanted to get away from LA. Gave the vibe of international without really being international. We’ve both agreed to come back again.

Marathon is a perfect place to stay. Next time we come it won’t be just us. We will stay closer to Key West and hopefully friends or family will tag along.

We flew into Miami. We had Delta plane tickets gifted to us. So we flew from MSY to Atlanta then to Miami. Miami is better than flying to Key West or Marathon. The drive is worth it at least once.

Disagree. Having a car in key west is more of a pain than a convenience. Plus you can be at your hotel within 15-20 minutes of walking off the plane if you fly into key west.

The Miami airport is awful. I would do just about anything to fly into Key West over Miami. I often fly out of my way through Charlotte or Newark to avoid that Miami airport. I get that people are curious about that drive through the keys, but once you’ve done it once the novelty wears off. After you’ve done it twice you begin to dread having to ever make that drive again.

^This. 100% the Miami airport is awful and the drive from Miami down to KW is super long. You don’t need a car in KW and the airport is super convenient.

We didn’t stay in key west. But Miami 100% is a horrible airport. We got lost leaving and arriving.

With us staying in marathon we needed a car.

You do realize that marrying her means you will not be able to visit tropical environments for the rest of your life?? Enjoy vacationing in Siberia. Lol
