But I’ll probably end up staying in BR/STG

You've listed six high expense locations, and your only alternative is BTR? Valencia, Spain, is 24% cheaper than BTR.

There are TONS of places that are cheaper, including on the Med than having to deal with Baton Rouge metro BS.

Plan to travel a good bit but think base of operations will be in Florida.

Upper Michigan is magical in summer. Hell in winter

But are you allowed to buy seeds? Or only tools? Unpowered tools? What about paint? What is essential? What has the governor decided this month? Is the flu on the spread?

I won't quote the links because this isn't poli, but if you want to avoid, "just leave me alone," MI seems the last place you'd want to do it. I don't even know WI was as bad as MI for "red" states. States full of deer hunting baws that re-elect people 100% against the leave me alone lifestyle. Don't get the attraction to be there permanently.

Living near multiple hubs is best for travel, which means TX. summer in DFW is worse than the outskirts of Houston within an hour of IAH. You have access to Star Alliance flights out of IAH, as well as cut rate flights on OneWorld (AA/BA connecting in DFW for a direct flight somewhere.) Florida has some alliance exploitation options, for sure.

I don’t even think understand this type of question. Retirement is not a destination. Where you may be going impacts the financial analysis.

It may take 10 more years of working to retire in Destin with a boat than wherever you work now at current standard of living. That’s just a simple illustration.

Given any place, I think most people would pick a big city or somewhere more remote. It’s so incredibly personal I just don’t get how you could answer the question. Seriously, to me retirement means financial independence which inherently comes with sacrifice. I’d rather get to that place sooner than later in Amite City than Martha’s Vineyard.

We’ve been vacationing in Blue Ridge for the last 15 yrs. Just got back today. Downtown has really changed. They have a Hampton Inn now. The commercialization of the area has exploded.

It’s time for us to find a new quiet north Georgia, eastern Tennessee, or western North Carolina town to start visiting.

Keep me posted on what you find.

I am trying to keep it a reasonable distance. Can't fly direct to Atlanta from Vero, but I can from Melbourne (45 minutes to the Airport). Vero has flights to Baltimore direct. We also have direct flights to Charlotte, but I can always fly out of Melbourne or Orlando (90 minutes away) and make a connecting flight, since it'll probably be 4-6 flights per year.

I'm surprised I haven't heard about more places in West Virginia. Harper's Ferry, maybe? I have a son who lives in Laurel, MD, which would be convenient. Jasper sounds good, too.

North Georgia is very convenient to Birmingham. I hate that everyone else has seemingly ‘found’ it. I’ll find a place to go.

I'm going to retire in a year or two. We currently live in Vero Beach, and love it. We are renting and planning to buy a house before houses start to go up.

My in-laws split time between Vero and Md. the wife and I split time between South Florida and a couple places.

For the wife and I we pick places by climate and accessibility. I have to be 30 minutes or so from an airport. When we were first looking for a summer place we wanted a place with a mild summer, a college town with a walkable downtown. We looked at Madison, Wisconsin; Burlington, VT; Ithaca, NY; Boulder, CO; and Boise, ID.

No one I know spends the summer in Florida if you don’t have to for work.

I live in Vero Beach year-round. I work remotely, so can live anywhere. I would prefer being hot in the summer than shoveling my driveway someplace in the winter. The whole reason for this search is to find a place that is not so hot in the summer.

Forever home is my farm in central Va.

But I've started my 5 year travel and live in different places plan.

I'm in Va Beach now. Love it. Close to the Oceanfront, can riide my bike all over town to cool bars and restaurants. i have a boat / jetski, lots of water to explore.

Moving to Phoenix next month.
Spring will be St Pete.
Summer will be NYC
Thinking of Nashville for the fall.

Would get bored to be stuck in one place.

Flagstaff, AZ - Unmatched western scenery within an hour in any direction and mountain weather.
Flagstaff - if "mountain weather" means really freakin wet and you are ok with that. The summer monsoon there is for real. And they can get 100 inches of snow.

No thanks.

Prescott AZ would be a much better choice IMO.

I'd travel the U.S. extensively in a camper van or truck camper for a while, but family considerations would probably keep me GA based.

Winter: Move to the Villages for the lifestyle.
