Based on cost of living, vibe, easy to get around, close to things to do, good restaurants, etc.
I'm going to retire in a year or two. We currently live in Vero Beach, and love it. We are renting and planning to buy a house before houses start to go up.
My wife is paranoid about living on the barrier island, because of potential flooding if a hurricane hits us directly. So we're going to buy on the mainland. I started thinking that there are some really nice houses well below our price range (we're downsizing) and maybe we might get summer home somewhere and have a smaller home than we intended in Vero Beach.
Where can you get a summer cabin for $400k or less, that would be a fun place to spend in the Summer? The idea being that it is not as hot and humid as Vero Beach is in the summer.
Right now this is just an idea we are bandying about...

Flagstaff, AZ - Unmatched western scenery within an hour in any direction and mountain weather.
Astoria, OR - Spring year round and it's everything The Goonies make it out to be.
Bisbee, AZ- If my late-life crisis turns me into an eccentric old man that likes looking at smoking hot mid-20s hipster chicks and bar hopping while butterflies fly around you all day, then count me in.

First take would be Traverse City, Michigan or surrounding areas like Petoskey. Virtually my favorite place in the country it’s got it all, but that might be too far for you.
Three spots rise to the top: Blue Ridge, GA, Brevard, NC, and Boone, NC.
Blue Ridge is the warmest of the bunch, usually mid-80s in summer, but it has great lakes and tons of cabins on the market. Brevard runs a little cooler and has that classic North Carolina mountain feel — waterfalls, forests, and summer days in the low 80s. Boone is the real standout if you want to escape the heat completely. Thanks to the elevation, summer highs are often in the upper 70s with crisp evenings.
All three have cabins under $400k, but the vibe is different in each place. Blue Ridge is more of a lake-and-tourist town, Brevard feels like a laid-back mountain community, and Boone gives you true cool-weather summers. Any of them would make a great summer escape — just depends on what kind of “cool” you’re looking for.

Michigan
Where you can't buy seeds in a pandemic. The whiplash some of these states have had in the last decade have to remove them from consideration.

Michigan upper peninsula(UP). Lakes, small.and large, rivers, wilderness and perfect summer weather. You can be inland or on lake Superior or lake Michigan for under 400k. Wisconsin also but maybe more expensive. Summer only, winters are brutal.

It's all about money to me (shocking, being the Jew.)
Income taxes on IRA withdrawals and property taxes are paramount. I'll figure the rest of the stuff out. I can live in my area and pay 3.6% in property taxes, or move 1000m away and pay 1.5% in taxes. And certain counties (FU Fort Bend) will increase your valuation to the max the state permits (10% a year,) while the county a half mile away will increase it under 1%, or decrease it.
Based on what you like, it sounds like the Mediterranean is the place for you. Protected water, cheap property in Bosnia and other countries around there. Start recording House Hunters International for Southern Europe. Yes, there is a level of BS to it, but you do get more of a taste for life than most TD posters have is worth TV minutes.

If I had no kids-Montana or Wyoming. I’d take long warm trips in dead of winter.
Since I have grown kids-where they are.

Maine would be my choice for a summer only escape cabin.
