I know. Trashy. However, it’s part of a package and I’ve got to deal with it. Never flown spirit before, but it’s a short flight so I’ll deal with it.

Anyone have tips/advice to keep from getting completely raped? Me, wife, and one kid. Packing tips, etc. would be helpful. What to buy and what not to buy as far as upgrades, baggage, seat selection, etc. TIA

The point of spirit is to be as cheap as possible. So look up the baggage restrictions and stick to them. I have what is essentially a suitcase but its a backpack, and it works within their limitations and I fit most stuff I need for short trips.

If you have no connections, and you pack properly, no upgrades are necessary and you'll be fine.

I don't mind them. I like their non stops to Vegas. They are fine. Just remember that they charge you for every little bag larger than a purse.

i flew with them somewhat recently on a short triip from NOLA to Orlando and thought the $50 upgrade on that route for the "big seat" was well worth it.

usually with spirit carry on is more expensive than checked luggage.

Fly them a fair amount. Backpacks are free if they fit under the seat. Anything else, including water, they will charge you for. Not the most comfortable seats ever but for shorter, direct flights it is generally worth the savings IMO.

Flown Spirit and it's definitely no frills, but it gets you from A to B safely. If it meant saving a lot of money, I would fly with them again.

Ive flown them a few times. Always been fine, it's a cheap way to get from A to B. Read the website, measure the bags and be compliant.

I normal fly with them 4x a year, but alone.
Just always shortest time for my trip.
I get the "package upgrade for seat, 1 carry and 1check..
Never had a issue with delays or cancelations.

Fly AA last year, what a nightmare thru Miami.

From what I have seen any backpack is a “personal item” and free. Never saw anyone stopped with a backpack. Only rolling bags. Once you board go ahead and put that personal item in the overhead to have more leg room.

They move their flight times around on you. I had a flight they moved up from 8pm to 9am. Also move my return flight around.

Pay extra for the exit row or front seat. You can bid for the upgrade.
Bring your own entertainment and buy snacks at the airport.
I fly spirit a lot.

This I carry a back pack bag that is a like little larger than they allow for free but they have never given me an issue with it.

The only negative I've had was I had a connection in Fort Lauderdale one time. For some reason the flight was canceled. When they refunded they only refunded the base fare but not the fees and add ons. So I got a refund of $37 towards a $120 ticket.
I then had to book a $250 flight the next morning with Southwest.

Thanks all for the info. One more: I’m flying with the wife and kid. Should I pay for seat selection to keep us together? Really would prefer we don’t get split up. Or do they make a reasonable effort to keep families together.

If there is anything you want with Spirit, pay for it. That being said, if you want to sit together on any airline it's always a good idea to pay for it but on spirit, considering the clientele and who you might be sitting next to it's almost necessary.

Totally fine for short flights.

I live in Los Angeles and take 24 hour trips to Vegas every now and then and will often catch a spirit flight thats less than $30 one way.
