At what Point do you consider renting a vehicle when driving to vacation destination?

About 1k miles round trip. Was looking at a larger suv or mini van for 3 adults and 2 car seats. My atlas would be tight with someone sitting in between two car seats

That's exactly what my ex wife is doing for a week in Denver/CO Springs from Houston. Larger SUVs over distance (unless you could find a diesel for rent) are not going to have great gas mileage, but I guess it's better than five plane tickets plus a large rental on the other side.

Only done rental vehicles to or from home when moving stuff one way: rented an SUV one-way to move a bunch of my daughter's stuff to grad school in Charleston, then flew home, did the reverse to move her stuff home, etc.

But we OFTEN rent a car after we fly somewhere (in North America), whether it's visiting national parks and such, or just driving around a city like L.A., Seattle, or San Francisco and possibly going to nearby natural locations (Yosemite, Mt. Rainier).

Recently I've driven my personal vehicle on multi-day vacations/trips from New Orleans as far as Kansas City/St. Louis, Cincinnati/Louisville, and Asheville/Raleigh. In the past I had done it in my own vehicle as far as Big Bend National Park, Miami, Chicago, and Washington DC. I don't ever drive for long-distance vacations like that anymore, and have never driven a REALLY long way for a vacation before (like out to Utah, Wyoming or Colorado, or up to New England). I just fly and then rent.

We rented a Suburban a few years ago to go to Gatlinburg with 6. I wouldn't hesitate to do that again. Plenty of room for everyone, security of knowing any roadside emergencies would be handled by the rental company, and better gas mileage than my 4 door truck (20mpg compared to 16mpg)

Rented a Chrysler Pacifica thru Costco Travel for a trip to Orlando from Houston. 4 adults and 2 kids plus luggage. Got 29mpg. less than $450/week
and rolled up 2350 miles. No brainer

It was a few years ago. Looks like it's closer to 20

Just did exact same thing to move my son out of dorm for the summer. .. 2k miles @ 30mpg, net cost was under 150 after factoring in the gas savings vs the Sequoia we had taken the other times. Minivan is the sweet spot for space and good gas mileage

Yes, generally to have a more spacious vehicle for the number of people, especially if more than 4. Minivans generally are the sweet spot for this, good milage and space for people and luggage.

Also, there is something nice about not having to get your daily vehicle cleaned, unpacked, packed, cleaned after for a trip. And if something happens to the vehicle its covered (with the right CC) and doesn't usually involve your personal insurance.

I rented a minivan to go to Disney once and anther time had an suv provided by insurance after a wreck and took it to Disney.
I like to fly and rent cars. I've done that a lot.

For most drives, no. I don’t mind putting highway mileage on my vehicles.

I will on occasion rent a minivan or big SUV when it makes sense based on number of people and space needs.

Yes, depends on the distance.

Anything under 6 hours/300 miles one way, take your personal vehicle.

Anything over 400 miles one way, I either rent a car (if it is within a one day drive), otherwise you gotta fly and rent a car when you get there.

If you travel a lot of miles, it's not worth running up the miles on your personal vehicle. imo.

Never rented but just wanted to say minivan is the way to go, we just bought an Odyssey and there may be no better vehicle for traveling than a minivan. Stick one, or both, car seats in the 3rd row, captains chairs for the 2nd row, plenty room for luggage even with the 3rd row up, better mileage than a big SUV too.

While I agree that people underestimate the mileage cost on their vehicles, I'm not convinced the math makes sense to rent either.

IF you are renting, a 3rd party has to pay your costs + make money. You are adding an expense variable.

We are doing a driving trip from Louisiana to Key West and planning to take our Camry. Has all the things I use most like predictive cruise control and gets 37-38 mpg, and an amazing amount of trunk space for a midsized car.

If it came with diesel engine then it probably was close to 27 mpg.
