Depends on the trip. Caribbean beaches or Mexico, no way. To my FIL’s cabin in NC, totally. Always a mini van. Always through Costco.

It depends. I've rented to go on road trips to destinations, but with a large SUV/gas/hotels to sleep on the way, you're almost at the cost of flying.
So, if you want to experience the road trip I would say it's worth it.
I've also driven my own, both I don't like doing that consistently.

I usually rent only if I know I’ll be moving around a lot, like your North Carolina cabin trip. For flights where I need more comfort on long hauls, I’ve used travelbusinessclass to save a chunk on business seats, which makes juggling rentals and longer drives way easier once I land. Renting ends up feeling less tiring when the flight isn’t rough.

Minivans are the best vehicles are the road. They just look horrible.
Minivans are significantly cheaper than a full-size SUV when renting. With kids, there is no comparison in minivan > full size SUV. You only have to worry you’ll want to buy one after renting.
Most minivans through rentals are Pacifica or Dodge Caravan. These are fine but usually basic trim levels with limited infotainment/ DVD players. Some dealerships (Audi) will rent cars at higher trim levels. This is nice to do when not needing to pick a car up from airport.
Specifically Price Leblanc in Baton Rouge will rent top trim level Siennas at affordable rates. We did 6 adults and 6 suitcases to Kentucky and back and averaged 33mpg. Was a great experience and more room than a Suburban.
