Disney Fastpass+ is officially dead

We had a feeling it wasn't coming back, now we know it will be replaced by two different new "premium" services.
The fastpass queue will now be known as the Lightning Lane.
Genie+ will be used for most rides and attractions. It will cost $15/person/day. All reservations will be day of. You can make one reservation at a time, starting at 7 am park time. When you have completed that ride/attraction, you can then pick the next one, throughout the day.
However, the most popular rides (list to be determined) will not be on Genie+, and will instead use a service called "Individual Lightning Lane". With this service, you can access the quick line for up to two high-demand rides/attractions per day. You will pay for each ride seperately. For example, It may cost $10/ticket to ride Mine Train once, and $8/ticket to ride Space Mountain once. You can make these reservations starting at 7 am park time if you are staying in a Disney hotel. If not, you can't start making them until the particular park opens.
Both of these services are compatible with park hopping.
For a family of four on a four-day ticket... you are looking at $240 more for a service that used to be included... PLUS the individual ride costs for the most popular rides.
At Disneyland... the genie+ will cost $20/person/day but will include photopass.
There is also a "Genie" service that will be part of the My Disney Experience app that will help plan your day - this is no additional price.
Service is supposed to begin "this fall"

Disney is trying to nickle and dime their park guests until numbers start going down. Loss of park guests offset by the increased revenue from this.
I think it’s a terrible idea.

Genie+ is basically what Max Pass was at Disneyland and I always found it worth it. Of course the main difference is you could still get free FP there if you didn't want Max Pass.

The Genie option appears to be free. Wait times for our recent visit were reasonable and we rode most of the main attractions in a single day. But more WDW resorts will be opening and park capacity will keep going up. People will be happy to pay a la carte prices to cut a long line.

I agree the wait times have been extremely manageable since they eliminated FP and it's been my favorite addition (by subtraction) since COVID but thats when probably 99% of the attractions capacity is dedicated to the standby line.
The effect on standby wait times won' really be known until we know how much of the attractions capacity will be dedicated to the lightening lanes.
Will it be 75% like FP+? I don't think so. Will it be 50%, 40%, etc.

FastPass was cool when you just went by the ride and grabbed a physical voucher. I don't want to plan rides months in advance.

This. It’s gotten absurd. The planning now for Disney is ridiculous.
I also am not a fan at all for the “pay to play” model. Yes I can afford it but it also makes it a lot more expensive for a small family.

Genie is simply the upgrade to My Disney Experience that handles wait time lists, dining, and now you can create touring plans. Yes, it is free.
Genie+ is the add-on that replaces Fastpass+. This is a pay service.

I would expect at least 75%. It has to be enough to make people justify paying for it.

So this is actually a return to the past... as you can only make your selections day of, and only one at a time (for Genie+).

Pretty much. The way I read it, and I may have read it wrong, is on the day of you can make one at a time. So when they scan your app at the ride it opens back up for another selection.
Another thing Disney seems to be doing is removing perks for staying onsite. Disney Express going away, no more booking fastpasss selections before offsite guests and fewer early entry/late evening options. It's making it harder to justify staying onsite now.

I have to think they will incorporate some perks like maybe one genie+ selection per day with resort stay.
With that said, as someone who liked to plan and is usually out of the parks by 2pm, I do not like this. With FP+ I knew which attractions we would be at and which attractions we could hit up in between the FP and have a breakfast, lunch or dinner planned. Now we wont know until 7am what our first attraction will be much less any other one for the day.
We may be sticking with Universal for a while with just a hop over to Disney for a day or two.

Same here. At least with the new system, you can't make fast passes until the day of your visit. That's why I loved Max Pass at Disneyland.

How do they expect people's phones to still have battery life halfway through the day of being at the parks with all this use?
Bring back the physical fast pass even if I have to pay for it

All this makes my head spin

Not sure how I feel about it yet. Stories of crowds this summer had me worried. We usually go in the off season so crowds aren't usually as bad but with COVID, who knows what to expect. Planning on going late January/early February. Even in the cooler weather, I don't want to be waiting in lines for 45+ minutes for Haunted Mansion, PoC, etc. Was already planning on staying in a deluxe resort since it looks like they may offer 2 extra hours at the end of the day.
But planning the trip is one of my favorite parts.

Ahh you are in luck... as they currently sell fully charged power banks in the resorts and in the park... and when the power bank dies, you can trade it in for another fully charged one for a low fee!

Yup that's it

Plus now having to pay for parking at the resorts if you have a car.
Supposedly one new "perk" is going to be for the E-ticket passes that aren't part of Genie+, you will be able to book those at 7 am day of if you are staying onsite. If you are offsite, you won't be able to book until park open time.
Disney was never "cheap" but I agree it's getting harder and harder to justify the higher cost of staying onsite.

For real. If I never go there again, it'll be too soon.
