3 hours ain’t getting you to Orange Beach or Pensacola boss. LOL

This is the biggest reason we go to the beach once a year. I can’t stand driving more than 4-5 hours. There is just not much else good for the family to do without 5 hours of Nola during the summer.

And of course we take other trips where we fly and see the rest of the country.

I get it I guess and to each their own. I’ve just made that trip so many damn times it was becoming just automatic every year that we’d go to that area. I still think it’s a beautiful place but it’s just so commercial and crowded now (not to mention as expensive as doing just about anything else in the world outside of going to bora bora). I’ve also lost all desire to sit on a beach all day. Give me 1-2 hours max. I have zero desire to set up a big arse canopy and carry a wagon full of stuff out there to make a day of it. The kids do enjoy it but I’ve found that they enjoy just about anything that gets them outta the boot for a few days. If I’m hell bent on a driveable trip (I’m usually not ) give me Texas hill country /new braunfels area over the panhandle 10/10. To each their own though y’all 30A it up if that’s your thing.

I can’t help but point out that the first photo you posted is a couple of dumpsters and a parking lot.

Which is why I said 3 to 4 hours, in other words over 3 hours but under 4 hours. Just jumped on google maps and it says it'll be 3 hours & 30 minutes to Orange Beach, 3 hours & 20 minutes to Pensacola, & 3 hours & 26 minutes to the beach house we have booked for after summer camp

Only time I went over 4 hours on these trips was when I wasn't paying attention and ended up going through the tunnel while also dealing with an accident that was just on the other side of the tunnel.

I'm not a big fan of 4+ hour drives either which is why we opt for Ft Morgan

It's got seclusion, proximity to great golf, 30 minutes to the Outlet Mall, 15 minutes to a big grocery and less than 5 to a quick mart and a HUGE beach to accommodate all the guests without feeling like you're on top of each other.

My wife's parents have a house in Seagrove Beach on 30A and my parents have a house in Fort Morgan. I can appreciate both places but personally really enjoy the secluded feeling of Fort Morgan. We are definitely lucky that we don't have to shell out thousands to go to either place, though. I also love going out on the boat more than sitting on the beach all day. 30a is not a boating community like Ft. Morgan/Gulf Shores/Orange beach is.

I’m really going to look into Fort Morgan for our next trip.
The kids are older now and don’t need to be near the entertainment venues. I pretty much gave up on Destin five years ago and now Orange Beach isn’t as appealing.
There are smaller condo areas to get into that aren’t as crowded though.

September is my favorite time to go. Prices drop after Labor Day and kids are back in school which help with the crowds

Looking at trying again in Oct to see if it’s any better. The whole area outside of our section of beach was terribly crowded. The heat was fricking oppressive too (I’m from Alabama and it usually doesn’t bother me).

I’ll check out Navarre.

Costa Rica is cheaper? Anyone care to give out some ideas?

It’s great October-November.

This summer is actually the first time I’ll be going to 30a during peak season. We got one of those glorified suites at Seacrest Beach. The Village at South Walton. Perfect for my little family.

I’m not a big dead of the summer beach person, but my wife wanted to take our 1 year old. They’ll both love it, so I guess that’s what matters… but not looking forward to the crowds at all. Wife’s in for a shock probably. She never experienced the Destin summer crowd growing up.

We just got back from 5 days in Cabo and had a great time. Weather was perfect, great meals out and the service at the hotel was outstanding. 30A is nice but the crowds and pricing are nuts. We are headed to Montana in July for less money than a week at a nice place in the panhandle. And the heat in July along the coast is no fun. Now October / November are the times to go .but my kids are still in school so that is tough for. Us.

It certainly can be. United has plenty cheap & quick flight options into San Jose. Rent a car and super easy drive to stay in an AirBnB in Manuel Antonio area (easy to find one with a great view of the Pacific. As of a few years ago, it was like $0.80 USD to hop on the bus to the park entrance. Awesome beaches, animal watching & hiking in the park. Plenty of good dining options within walking distance of many rentals.
Great fishing, inshore and offshore, but not as cheap as some other countries. That said, definitely worth it for at least 1 day, if you're into that.

As mentioned, anytime that's not Spring Break/Summer, really.

On holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.) it still gets slammed but it's a more "laid back" busy. The entire atmosphere changes when you don't have hordes of families crowding toward the beaches/pools all the time in sweltering heat with coolers, floats and tents. And listen I understand why it's like that in the Summer, it's the beach in the summer, but in the fall/winter people spend more time inside and diversify their activities, and it just completely changes the feel around the towns and on the beaches.

My family probably likes Sept/October the most because you can still count on some very beachy days. I like November. It's usually sunny, crisp, but plenty warm enough to hang out on the beach in the afternoon. It's also much nicer to walk or bike around the area that time of year. Clear, high 50s mornings with shorts and a pullover walking/biking with the kids to get a donut and coffee, etc. Beach in the afternoon, maybe college football with the gulf in the background. Early sunset drinks on the beach from Chiringo before doing the Red Bar thing, all in normal clothes without sweating. That's the ideal for me.

Fair point, I just mean that the argument for 30A may lose some steam if it involves limited/connecting flights and/or 10 hours in the car.

October is my favorite month to visit the panhandle but with 5th and 7th graders I’m confined to summers and holidays.

My parents took us out of school to go on trips in the fall. Not sure if that'll fly these days, guess I'll find out soon.

The beach is where we go to relax. We don't go out to bars and we don't go out to eat.

I guess different people have different definitions of relaxing

Hanging out in a beach community while walking or riding bikes to bars and restaurants is relaxing to me. I can't go somewhere and literally just sit on the beach for a week straight, I need some sort of entertainment.
