Going out of the country for a month and going to have some people coming by the house to take care of my dog, essentially strangers from rover. I want to manage their access using a keypad or smart lock.

what im looking for:
- ability to create/delete a handful of codes to unlock the lock
- battery to last the entire time I'm away
- extremely reliable. don't want be missing appointments for my dog because the dog person can't get in and constantly hitting up my local support system to come troubleshoot the lock.

bonuses:
- app for managing the lock locally
- wifi connected app for remote management

August locks

I’m a fan of this company. Very easy to install. Don’t need to ditch your existing deadbolt. (Most of the time)

Good software and does what you want.

I have a eufy lock with biometric keypad and rechargeable battery. I charge the battery once every 4-6 months or so.

I absolutely love it. Fingerprint lock/unlock is awesome.

I bought the smart lock about 2 years ago, and it has worked great since then. I change the batteries out about every 4-6 months. (The lock will start sending alerts about low battery, but it will last a good month or almost 2 after the alerts begin.)

I really like my two Schlage smart locks. The main reason I chose Schlage is, after watching a bunch of re-keying videos for all of the brands I could find, Schlage seemed to be the easiest to re-key, and kits to do it were readily available. I have had mine installed for around 6 months now and they are still on the original batteries, so I have no idea how long they will last. My kids are grown and on their own so my locks don't get the workout that you younger folks locks might get.

I think my Lockly brand will do all that. The battery life shouldn't be a problem with any of them.

I have a couple of Next x Yale locks. Both do everything you're asking.

Same. I don't even have the Wi-Fi version. Still love the thing.

I REALLY like the Aqara Smart Lock 100 or something. It works really well and the battery lasts a long time. It works really well with Apple HomeKit and Apple Home so it's a winner in our house.

Kids can program a keycode and/or their fingerprint. Same with dog walkers and such.

We just got the Aqara and it seems like it'll be a good one. Without a dedicated hub it's a bit different in that you've got to run it through HomeKit but I guess that's just how it goes.

We've had an August lock on our house for over 2 years now, we love it. That being said, ours only works on a 2.4 GHz signal. It does not support 5 GHz connection. That is literally the only limiting factor that I can see with them. Wasn't an issue for us, and we love it.

good to know, i pretty much run everything on 2.4ghz wifi anyway for the range unless the thing is close to the router and i feel like it needs the speed boost. but, curious why you say 2.4ghz is a limiting factor for the august locks?

That’s how I do it. My whole family uses Apple home so we just run it through that.

2.4ghz is a limiting factor

This is a thing for a lot of smart home devices (MyQ garage openers, etc.) However, it's not the fault of the endpoint, it seems to be how your router handles using a single Wifi network name (SSID) for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, and how it will time out the connection attempt to join the network. I've had to connect smart home devices to the default AT&T 2.4Ghz only network that was sitting in front of my router.

OP, something to consider, try to get a lock with physical buttons if the keypad will be pointing at a lot of concrete. The touch screens don't function very well when there is a lot of reflected sunlight shining from the driveway (etc.) onto the keypad face. I had to move a touch screen to the backyard door for that reason.

Almost all of the brands (Kwikset, Schlage, etc.) sell smart locks in both ZigBee and Z-Wave connectivity flavors. If you have alarm contacts, smart plugs, thermostats, etc., that run on one or the other, but the version of that lock that supports that. I went with Schlage because our original locks were Schlage, and I could re-key everything to use one entry key easily.

Prepare for app hell, though. One lock company may have three different apps that work with different series of locks from the same brand. You want whomever is visiting to rely on the lock itself, and not an app to unlock the door. There were repeated incidents where the realtor's keybox that depended on T-Mobile wouldn't work, but I could create and send a code to the side door for the Schlage that would get them in the door in minutes.
