I’ve pretty certain I’ll go with Ubiquiti products, and a few AC PROs. The next question was router and switches and POE. My router shouldn’t need to broadcast WiFi, only distribute to the APs, and handle traffic. It will be located in a central media closet.

I don't have a modem. Fiber has a switchover to Cat6 where a modem isn't needed. Unifi Security Gateway functions as my router.
Here's my setup
Fiber to Cat6 -> Unifi Security Gateway -> Unifi US-8-150W Managed PoE switch -> APs / Unifi Cloud Key / Hardwired items (computers, etc.) / other switches
Unifi Cloud Key is a controller, so you don't have a computer constantly connected to your network to control your network.
I got everything up and running last night, very very nice setup and a lot more power than anything I have tested. The switching between APs while walking around the house are seemless. I can get so much further from my house and still have great access. The level of control in the software is definitely enterprise level. Nice to have a bit more configuration control. The layout of the software is very easy to use so far as well.

I have the Orbi RBK50 . Very easy to set up. Found one on sale on eBay and had a 25% coupon so it was a no brainer. Now that I have it I would have paid full price.
If you have any dead wifi areas around your house, this system will solve it.

Is my impression of the cloud key correct? Basically, it provides a UI that will help you manage your system and you can access it remotely?
I have one LR access point as have been thinking about getting another. Is there much point for an average user in getting a cloud key in that situation?

I'm a bit late to this topic but I set up an Aimesh system at my church with two converted T-Mobile routers just a few days before Asus decided to be assholes.
The main router is in the office connected to the modem and the other router is used as a wireless node in the sanctuary. There was no pretty way to run a wire from one to another so it's connected wirelessly. They're about 50 feet away from each other and so far, it's working pretty good.

how are you still able to use the tmo routers? sticking with an older version of the firmware?
eta tmo issues aside, the aimesh solution is really slick. it has several clear advantages over the competition
* much faster throughput than google
* reusing existing FULL FEATURED routers with dual processors and lots of memory for satellites is a stroke of genius and will leave the 'hockey puck' in the dust
* if you have existing devices wired to your current router, you don't have to buy a new switch (and perhaps more costly PoE switch) because your new hockey puck only comes with a single ethernet port
* asus legendary full-featured mature router UX with tons of cusomizations and no retardo requirement to only manage it via phone
* ability to 'prototype' aimesh access points (since it works both wired and wireless) to determine optimal locations before you wire it..and of course it doesn't require PoE to wire it.
* ability to use a myriad of existing asus products..no need to buy the latest & greatest of anything to take advantage

yea I'm using the firmware version right before they updated it to disable Aimesh on the T-Mobile router. I have no plans on updating the firmware.

I have a PC, but it’s only wireless and will not be connected at all times.
This is the first I’ve heard of the cloud key. Haven’t looked into it much but also trying to understand it.

Cloud key is just so you can control your network without a computer attached to it. You can also do it remotely with the app even if all your computers in your house are off.
