United States men's national team goalkeeper Matt Freese said he felt hurt by the backlash following the team's elimination from the 2026 World Cup after losing 4-1 to Belgium in the round of 16.

"It's just so difficult for me to hear that because if people were to see this group on a day-to-day basis and spend time with these guys more personally, they would see how badly we wanted it. They would see how bad I wanted it," Freese told ESPN on Tuesday.

"Two years ago, dreaming, like literally dreaming of this, and feeling the honor and the responsibility that comes with it. We wanted it so badly, more than anything else we've ever wanted, to capitalize on that and reward that support with something special. During the World Cup and the months leading into the World Cup, there was literally nothing else that crossed my mind."

quote:

"The desire and will to maximize our performance was so strong it hurts my heart to see that people don't know that because it is true. I wish I could talk to every person personally and individually and explain this to them and tell them this."

I dont think anyone thinks any of the guys on the team didn't want to win. We just want to know why you kicked the fricking ground and blew all the momentum we had and any chance we had at coming back in that game with one of the most boneheaded mistakes ever seen in any sporting event.

I think it's pretty clear this team is soft as charmin. Getting bullied around by freaking Belgium's backups should be enough to tell you that. They need a serious leadership boost by 2030.

Quotes like this don't bother me. He was asked a question and answered it truthfully.

Regardless of how I feel about Freese as a goalkeeper and that horrendous mistake, it's always good when players and coaches of any sport actually give honest responses instead of the usual coach-speak company line.

I don’t think it was that bad. Not like he’s just posting that on twitter unprovoked.

He was asked a question in a sit down interview. Honestly seems like he really feels bad for his mistake and letting down the fans.

It’s not that you lost Matt, it’s how you lost. Welcome to Robert green status.

Could have fooled me with the way he played.

Why can't our nation develop Goalkeepers worth a shite anymore? What a drop from Kasey Keller, Brad Freidel, Howard and Guzan to fricking Turner and Freese. Yikes

I’m sure he does, but this is the World Cup. He best just shut up, go to Europe, and become our clear #1 in 2030.

The dropoff happened when goalkeeping became less about making athletic saves and more about being able to play the ball with your feet to start the attack.

Tim Howard has said multiple times that he wouldn't be rated as a PL goalkeeper now because he never could play the ball with his feet.

Because we spend way too much time trying to emulate someone else’s model/system.

The “keeper sweeper” era of goal keeping has devalued keepers #1 responsibility, stop goals. We have the athletes, we have poor direction.

The position has changed and guys like Howard were two sport athletes. He played basketball. That is also less of a thing these days.

Our great keepers were always just pure shot stoppers. I don't think Turner is even bad at shot stopping or claiming crosses. He can't play with his feet at all.

When a goalkeeper makes a mistake, everyone will notice. Same mistake made in other parts of the field are just errors. Dude made a major mistake and it cost.

Bingo

But either way

What I want is for him to say “I massively screwed up and cost my team a chance to win while making the greatest GK mistake in the history of US soccer. I’ll never forget it and will be forever driven to redeem it”

Then we’ll see what happens. He can’t do anything else right now

What was he asked?

Who is saying our guys didn’t care about trying to winning or wanting to be there?

ETA: Ah, I see it has to do with someone saying lack of fight.

Yeah, I’ve got no issue with his answer.
