Doesn't seem like it.
But that's not JKs job. His job is to build a team that he thinks can win.

Hard to use that excuse when he takes Chandler.

The difference is that Klinsmann told Chandler from last Summer til January that he wasn't calling him up anymore. Donovan just didn't want to play period for a while and turned his back on the team when he was already an established leader on the pitch. That's the difference I see. Playing devil's advocate here, and yes, I still want Donovan on the plane.

This is just so weird. I have no reason to doubt that Klinsmann said that, but why the hell would a manager not call up a player for well over a year, when he intends to use him as a starter in the World Cup. It really makes no sense.

If the Americans hate him, they aren't going to stop hating him in June after he did none of the shared sacrifice yet gets all of the rewards. If he doesn't like playing for the team, he's not suddenly going to like it before the World Cup.

I am completely flabbergasted by the handling of Chandler by Klinsmann. And I think Chandler is a very talented and useful player.

Chandler is on the plane because:
1. He is a better RB than Cameron.
2. Cameron is a better CB than Gonzo.

But what about the time before that where Chandler used every excuse in the book to not play in a cap tying match?

I don't disagree with any of that.

But then why not call him up at all for an entire year?

Was he worried that it would kill chemistry? If so, why wouldn't he ruin chemistry before the World Cup?

Basically, if a guy is healthy, there is no reason not to call him up if you plan on using him for the World Cup. None.

There is an interview out there where Klinsmann talks about it. Basically he said that Chandler needed to prove to his teammates that he cared as much about this team as they did, and that he was just as committed. By all accounts Chandler has been getting along really well with everyone at camp.

You realize that Chandler has a crippling fear of flying, right? Or at least that's what I've heard.

Yes, he has said that. He has also said that he was exhausted, etc. But every time a friendly rolled around, he was ready to play.

It was all kinds of fishy.

Was the friendly in Europe? The Poland/Argentina round of friendlies was his first foray with the team. After that I don't remember.

For the Russia friendly, I fairly certain that he still had to fly Germany. I believe he played in the friendlies against Paraguay and Costa Rica in late 2011 as well.

Being scared of flying is also a terrible terrible excuse.

Not calling the guy up for anything and then rewarding him with a spot on the national team is a very strange way of letting Chandler show his commitment to the team.

Would you rather Chandler not be there?

There is a difference between flying from Germany to the US and flying from Germany to Western Russia.

I know many wouldn't agree but is rather he not be there. Literally has contributed nothing to the team whatsoever.

No. I would rather have Chandler there because we only have three defenders besides him who are any good.

However, I can't think of a worse way to manage a player than to not call him up for a year and then give him (presumably) the starting right back spot. That is moronic. His teammates don't know him. He has very limited experience playing with them. He has next to zero comfort or rapport. It's a way of putting a talented guy in a position to fail and/or draw resentment.

I don't think Keys is arguing that Chandler should not be there. Rather he is pointing to the inconsistencies in the reasoning certain people are using in attempts to justify Jurgy's selections and omissions. Moreover, the manner in which Jurgy handled Chandler is odd.

He has flown to the US for friendlies other than the Argentina one.

Don't get me wrong, if Cameron is not being viewed as a RB, I think Chandler is our next best bet.

Been running around like hell today. This may have already been discussed in here so if it has, I apologize. I saw Cakes' comments today about deserving to go based on the camp and so forth and everyone acting like because of this, he should have been taken. Has nobody on here ever heard someone say this at some point in life and be wrong. For example, "I killed that interview, I am going to get that job" or growing up hearing someone cut from a team say the same thing?

I'm not going to justify omissions or selections beyond that we should take the 23 best players available, and I know that Chandler is one of those best players. You go to a WC to win it, not to sing kumbaya. Both Donovan and Chandler deserve to be there as members of the 23, in that both improve our chances of winning games in Brazil compared to other options in the pool.
