The National Park Service announced last week that Yellowstone National Park's Mount Doane would be renamed First Peoples Mountain.
The agency said Thursday the change was taken to remove an "offensive name" from America's first national park.
The U.S. Board on Geographic Names voted unanimously, 15-0, affirming the decision.
The Wyoming mountain stands at 10,551 feet east of Yellowstone Lake.

The National Park Service said that in 1870, Doane led an attack on a band of Piegan Blackfeet in response to the alleged murder of a White fur trader.
"During what is now known as the Marias Massacre, at least 173 American Indians were killed, including many women, elderly Tribal members and children suffering from smallpox. Doane wrote fondly about this attack and bragged about it for the rest of his life," the agency wrote.

The park said it may consider additional changes to other "derogatory or inappropriate names in the future."

Notice they didn’t use a specific tribal reference. Why? Because the ones inhabiting that area when it was settled almost certainly killed off whoever was originally there.

Now they come for our culture and heritage.
They want us all to be citizens of planet earth who eat bugs and do what they’re told.
frick all that.

Once in South Dakota I saw a creek named "Brained Indian Creek" - and on the way to San Antonio on I-10 there was a crossing named "Woman Hollering Creek"
I wonder if those still survive.

There’s a National Wetlands Refuge just north of Kansas City about 70 miles that was known as Squaw Creek National Refuge….the Wokesters said it was degrading to Indigenous Americans to call the refuge Squaw Creek even though it’s what the Indigenous tribes called the area…..lol! It’s been renamed to Loess Hills National Wildlife Refuge and now everyone can sleep better…lol!
