Illegal immigration is driven by economics. Duh. But to take one country as an example, why do so many Mexicans sneak into America for a better economic future? Why aren't Americans trying to sneak into Mexico?

There's a joke about a Texan and a Mexican having a conversation. The Texan says to the Mexican, "Why do you guys blame all your problems on us?" The Mexican says, "Because you guys stole half our country. And not only that; you stole the half with all the paved roads."

So why is Mexico so poor?

Corruption and Cartels, to start.

I often wonder “What would it have taken?” for Mexico to become what China is to the US - a manufacturing zone for cheap goods. Plenty of stuff is made in MX, but what stopped much more in the 80s and 90s?

Besides corruption, the entire country has poor geography compared to other more successful ones.

No deep water ports, lots of mountains running throughout the center of the country, and water is unevenly distributed in the country to say the least.

Hard to have a good highway network in the country when a lot of those roads go through mountain peaks and have a lot of seismic and volcanic activity.

You already answered your own question

Honorable mention to very bad-to-non existent US immigration policy over the last several decades, and the War on Drugs.

Corruption is only a side effect or symptom of the legacy of Spanish cultural rule.

If Mexico would have been colonized by the Brits instead it would be one of the world's wealthiest countries.

The cartels are the easy answer but organized crime has always been to Mexico what it is to Italy.

I'm no geopolitical guy or whatever but when China was given permanent favored nation status about 20 years ago, that pretty much sealed Mexico's underdeveloped state.

We now see that China should've been left to rot and the whole of Central and South America given favored nation status. I guess somebody thought NAFTA alone would save Mexico.

But frick it, what do I know?

Geography, demographics, culture.

It’s ruled by a relatively small group of Spaniards. Underneath them, you have the mixed race Mexicans, and then the Indians.

The Spanish run the country for their own benefit, and they have good lives. The other classes may complain about it, and the misery that they experience, but on the other hand look at what the natives did to Venezuela when they took power.

Other than the ports, you just described the United States.

It doesn't help Mexico that a huge percentage of those with ambition and work-ethic wind up here.

That and corruption.

Corruption. Socialism.

There is no middle class. You are either poor or doing pretty well in Mexico. There's a weird classism thing, too, between native indigenous Mexicans vs European Mexicans.

It's really hard to imagine it, but I spent a lot of time in Mexico with my last company, and they have great neighborhoods in the big cities, but also some of the worst cardboard-plastic tarp slums on the planet.

Corruption
Cartels
2 different classes of citizens. Small minority of European descent Spaniards own and run the show and make lots of money. Majority of Mestizos are denied much opportunity to move up.
