Why is abortion so important to the Left?

Abortion seems to me to be their single most important issue. I have thought that for years and haven't seen anything to dissuade me from thinking that.
So why is abortion so important to the Left?

Most folks think of abortion the same way Herschel Walker did in 2009. It's easy to be against the concept in a theoretical sense, but the reality of abortion makes dealing with the impacts of a pregnancy very easy.
