What we believe today was not as fully developed as it was in the early Church. That does not equate to a lack of Trinitarian belief or teaching in the Church until Nicea. It just means that what was taught was in its infancy in terms of conceptual development.

What is important to note is that the doctrine of the Trinity is derived from the Scriptures, therefore regardless of what was taught or believed any any one person or group of people after the completion of the biblical canon, what God was teaching us existed in the Scriptures at that time.

To respond to your previous concern about God being a bad communicator due to competing teachings throughout history: there is no problem with communication on God's part. We, as sinful human beings, are prone to twist God's Words as Satan himself did, to come to false conclusions.
