Is it solely due to funding?
Top five reasons for our strong 2 party system in no order:
Stranglehold on funding
Stranglehold on Media
RNC and DNC are essentially the same thing in DC
Willingly ignorant populace
Unwilling independent candidates who join with the big parties

The problem is not with the party, it's with 'opportunism' on the part of the candidates. The voters are libertarian but the candidates (after Harry Browne) did not come up through the party. They failed to advance in the GOP (think Bob Barr) and saw it as a chance to get in the game.
The same thing happened with the Green Party. It's supposed to be the party of environmentalism. But they nominated Ralph Nader. He has ZERO to do with the Green movement. He's a class warrior liberal. He's the male version of Eliz. Warren.
Same with that black woman they nominated in 2016.

It would be interesting to have Libertarian (they could go either way I wager,) Constitution, Conservative, and Republican parties on one side and Green, Socialist, and Democratic as the primaries instead of just two parties but R&D would just win anyways

The question has been answered.

Why is that?
Well the United States uses a first past the post electoral system which means winner takes all.
Duverger's Law goes into why this system tends to favor the emergence of a two party system.
quote:
Duverger laid out two paths by which plurality voting systems lead to fewer major parties: the "fusion" or alliance of weaker parties into more effective factions, and the "elimination" of weak parties as voters gradually desert them because they have no chance of winning and influencing governance.
Now it's not an absolute rule but it seems to hold decently well. The link has more information.

I mean, essentially by definition their positions can only come about by the positions of others. It’s one of many reasons I rarely take anyone seriously who DECLARES themselves “independent.”

There isn’t an Independent Party
Single Member District elections tend to result in two party systems

Because independents are “independent” of a party.
If you mean a third party, it has to do with single member districts.

Independents put Obama in office TWICE .
That's crazy.

Why hasn't the independent party become powerful?
It’s why the Republicans failed for years while courting them so hard.

I dont see independents being timid about their true feelings, I believe it's just that they dont typically get worked up ideologically speaking to the extent that your solid Ds and Rs do.
It's more pragmatism than ideology.

Independent spans a pretty broad spectrum of views and ideology.
For example, I'm a registered independent... but if you break down my views into a specific label, I am a minarchist libertarian.

Because people are so bsessed with niche social issues that they feel compelled to pick R or D.

I'll disagree here. I think extremism to any party breeds a vocal majority.
So you end up with a silent majority that just doesn't speak up for a myriad of reasons.
Easy example. The people protesters for chik fil a. Most people love it, but you won't see a counter protest.
