The vast majority of citizens fall in that middle area between liberal and conservative, yet any independent candidate, especially running for president, is seen as a novelty?

Why is that?

Is it solely due to funding?

Because there isn't just one independent party. Anyone who says they are independent might have a totally different world view from someone else who says they are independent.

That and the legal framework at both the state and national level which institutionalizes the two-party system. Not least the fact that we do not have a Parliamentary system, which would provide representation to smaller parties.

What would be three big planks of the “independent party”?

Because this country has had a 2 party system since the first national elections.

"Independent" is a classification. It's not a party.

It is. Who controls the media.
Look at the harassment of the Tea Party and Conservatives on social media.

I can see that. But it's a constant game of "which beliefs do I truly believe in do I want my candidate to push for, but at the expense of the others that may be of equal importance".

How about fiscally conservative but socially liberal and a concentrated effort to unify Americans?

With a two party system you constantly pull at the edges, what everyone should do is push to the middle.

People often change or justify their beliefs by looking first to their political party.

This is why I say most wouldn't give a shite about climate change and abortion if they weren't part of the political platform

-Funding
-Lack of organization
-Lack of being galvanized around a single issue pulling independents together.

Because the far left and far right have created such a divide that normal Americans are stuck having to choose between 2 sides that suck. The crazies will drown out a independent.

That’s what the libertarian party should be. They fail at that a lot though. I voted for some Ls in Texas this last go round to avoid voting for crap Rs (namely Bush Jr Jr.)

I would have voted for Johnson in 2016 if not his abortion and immigration policies. I understand those are the more Libertarian stances, but they were big enough of an issue for me to not vote for him.

ETA: while I do have a lot of Libertarian leanings, a lot of the party is BSC and thus loses credibility.

Everyone wanted their own meeting places for the initial planning discussion and couldn't agree on that first conference space. Too independent. Doomed to fail from the beginning.

That was the Libertarian Party.

Because people can’t handle more than 2 sides.

This board being a prime example
