The OP is unaware of modern philosophers because the OP doesn’t read much.

a philosophical theory or approach that emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will."

What's so ridiculous about that? Let me guess you're just another hack who has no idea

Yes but it seems that philosophers don't become 'highly regarded' until after they are dead.

Philosophy should be a daily class grades 6 thru 12.

ETA: To answer your question, teaching people philosophy would make many abandon materialism and hurt the consumer economy.

I was once asked that, if I could instantly download the contents of any three books into the minds of everyone on the planet, what they would be. Top of my list was my Introduction to Logic textbook from undergrad.

NOTE: I am talking about systematic philosophy dealing with topics like epistemology and the philosophy of mind, etc. The stuff that the greats like Hume and Kant used to argue about.
Well part of the issue is that we can now actually scientifically study the things they argued at the time, but they were an essential foundation of these studies.

And I don't know how you can say that the epistemology was killed off around the turn of the 20th century, when Karl Popper is one of the most important philosophers in this area, specifically guiding the conceptualization and application of the scientific process.

On the other hand, I'm reminded that my degree is "Doctor of Philosophy" so maybe you're onto something regarding its demise.

Many years ago a friend who graduated from Harvard Law said 'Zach, the biggest mistake undergrads make is majoring in political science in order to get into elite Law Schools.'

Me: "What's the most impressive degree then?"
Him: "A double major in philosophy and math."

Taleb is fantastic.

I loved his short piece on Merchandising Virtue.

Political Science, and International Relations are woeful disciplines. They actually teach bad ideas. Ideas that you’ll have to unlearn in the real world.

Reducing the multitude of human experiences to trend lines is moronic.

If you plan on working at State, or in Politics, you’re better off studying English and History.

Agreed on Philosophy and Math though. The person who does that will get a serious education, and they’ll be a good, logical, thinker as well.

They have a lock on academia, especially in the North East.

I wouldn’t describe what they produce as knowledge though. It’s a shame what our universities have become. We traded rigorous intellectual debate for what, safe spaces and trigger words?

Well I’m in grad school in Louisiana and there’s more liberal thinking students. Significantly more than undergrad. Republicans aren’t furthering their education as much as liberals
