Why do old people go to the default argument of $6 coffee when talking about affordability

They always blame avocado toast and coffee for why younger people can’t afford things, but older generations spent plenty too.
Alcohol was a regular expense for a lot of boomers, and many still spend a lot on it today. So it’s a little rich to act like small daily purchases are the whole problem.

Because it's a wasteful expense. I would hope most people aren't buying $6 coffee frequently.

Because they know the value of a dollar.

Go by a Starbucks or 7 brew, lines are ridiculously long.
They're buying it for their fricking kids now while bitching about gas prices

Because it's something that didn't exist when they were young. It's actually a very good example, because it's something that is a completely unnecessary luxury.

So spending money back in the day on gallons of alcohol wasn't?

Wait until they start on the $4/bottle water

It’s a sign of carelessness. People don’t think about where their money goes. And it’s not just coffee. People are spending $60 on uber eats for fast food.
Do that enough and you’re just lighting money on fire.

Yep. People who drink alcohol should not complain about affordability. You’re paying money to poison yourself.

I don’t drink coffee.

Because younger generations spend themselves into debt on frivolities while complaining about not being able to afford necessities.

Vehicles are one that no one ever talks about for some reason. Between 2000 and 2016, new vehicle prices soared by 75%. Since then, its gone up another 40%. The average car loan tern in 2000 was 4 years. Today, its 6. Most dealerships assume 7 on their payment estimates.
In 2000, the average car payment was under 400 per month. Now its approaching 800.
People are stretching the financing out further to be able to afford cars, but it certainly doesn't help that the average blue collar family feels like they are entitled to a platinum F250 and a loaded Tahoe.

I have no sympathy for people with money issues spending money on luxuries, whether that's gin or a $6 frappo-whatever.
But one of the reasons that coffee is laughed at is because it's stupid simple to make at home; takes about 10 minutes. Brewing beer in your kitchen is a bit more complicated than that.

Now add up all those small daily purchases.
See, we are right. Told you so.

STFU. Alcohol was purchased...duty free for business meetings. With clients as a business expense write off. A regular six pack didnt cost a lot.
Sorry your tofu costs $15 for a two finger batch... At a stupid grocery store that pays the bongo drummer, and lady using yogurt as douche...So you pay for it at the checkout.

Do younger generations not drink alcohol? No wonder they’re so miserable. Put the caramel mocha latte down and have a few real drinks.

Because young people aren't willing to sacrifice anything or wait or slowly build anything.
Multiple subscriptions to everything, $6 coffee, new phone ever year, new car every three years, want a big paycheck at 25, $400k home at 30, etc.
$6 coffee is just shorthand for all of that

Eliminate Starbucks, bottled water, alcohol and dine out only once a week (that includes lunch)..
Do this for one month and you will understand.
Didn't mention smoking..but quit that also.

Same as paying for Door Dash when you can either cook something yourself or at least get your lazy arse out to pick up your own already expensive takeout. It's a luxury that people who don't have that type of money are paying for that's infuriating.
