A $400k home in most major cities isn't exactly a mansion.
I would say look at 200k homes, and tell me if someone making 50K a year can really afford that.

People tell me they paid their way through college with summer jobs back in the 60's-70's. A few hours in the evening or weekends bought them cars and everything else they had need of. Now it won't even pay the rent. Greed ruins everything.

Its about people being too gd lazy to make their own so they spend 5x as long waiting in line so they can pay 12x as much. Then spend 15-20 on lunch instead of buying $10 worth of meat and bread to last all week. Then go to the bar and pay $5-10 per drink instead of $1 per drink. Then after theyve wasted $500-800 a month they bitch bc rents $100 higher this year and how they cant afford to buy because they cant be bothered to save for a few years.
They spend and extea 500/month to rent 2000 sq ft and spend maybe a few hours a week in 3/4 of the space and no matter how " bad" it is can always manage to find money for that $100 bag of pet food for the pet they leave locked up 20 hours a day. Dont forget the nicotine and energy drinks!

Financial literacy is an issue. Some people do not understand sellers and lenders are only interested in profits no matter how nice they act.

bullshite. My daughter is a teacher, mid 20s at the time, and when her car was unexpectedly totaled she paid $18k cash for a used Mazda because she knew it would need replacing at some point and had been saving. The fact that most people don't do it doesn't mean it's impossible, and she would tell you it wasn't even that difficult.
She's also a homeowner and doesn't live in a crack neighborhood, but I get that housing is very, very local. Buying a car isn't.

Its at least $8 coffee now. $6 at Starbucks might get you a 16 oz. black coffee.
But their Clover vaccuum brewer does make a pretty good cup....if only their beans weren't so burnt.

Especially when you spend north of 1,000/year on coffee, have a few hundred a month in gaming/video/phone subscriptions and pay to have your lawn mowed. None of the younger residents in my subdivision mow their own lawns I could write a book on how young people waste all their money

This is depressing, I'm probably 3-4 years out from having to get a new car but still. I bought a lightly used 2017 Camry in 2020 & the payment was a whopping $215.87 a month
