If you really are curious and find something I would be interested in what you find I had always thought HFCS was considered safe across the globe but that some places regulate it to protect domestic industry - like Europe protecting beet farmers.

I remember reading that it is hard on the liver and that it damages DNA, but I'm sure those findings are relatively recent when considering how long we've been using it in our food.

I always fall back on the anecdotal evidence we all see.

There weren't no fat people before we switched!!!

You’ve never heard of the sugar wars of the late 70’s and early 80’s? Sugarcane farmers in Louisiana were upset because it was cheaper to import sugar than produce it domestically. The federal government responded by placing taxes on sugar imports. The result was that domestic food manufacturers sought an alternative to sugar to keep costs low and they made the switch to High Fructose Corn Syrup. This is why domestic soft drinks manufacturers no longer produce their products with cane sugar, but mexican cokes do.

It’s hard on the liver because liver is the only place in the body fructose can be metabolized. Sucrose on the other hand can be metabolized throughout the body. Your body shuts down the glycolytic pathway in order to metabolize fructose.

Let me introduce you to the Fanjul brothers. They own a huge sugar plantation in Florida and Dominican Republic.

They own Casa De Campo a resort with the famous Teeth of the Dog golf course. They have hosted both Bush presidents, Clinton.

One brother is republican and one a democrat. When Al Gore proposed a one cent per pound tax on sugar to clean up the everglades, the democrat brother called the White House and asked for Clinton. Thats not power. Clinton was in a meeting and he interrupted it to take the Fanjul call.....but thats not power. Clinton's meeting was with Monica......now that is power.

Through federal govt price supports and import quotas the Fanjul family makes an incremental, thats incremental 65 to 150 million annually. They have spent over 20 million lobbying both parties over the last 26 years. Hmmmmm a million a year in kickbacks for 65 million in pure profit annually, gotta love it.

One time a friend I hadn’t seen in a while invited me to come join him at the happy hour of a local institution type restaurant on a Friday afternoon after work so I went. He said I’m holding you a spot at the bar you better hurry up! There were like 500 people there. I found him and he was sitting at the bar next to a group of frat bros but between him and the frat bros there sat this wilted rhett butler looking fella who was very very drunk considering it wasn’t even dark yet

As we sat there catching up rhett butler put his arm around my friends’ neck and said “aren’t yall some fine strapping young men” and my friend pulled his arm off and said hey you’re pretty drunk there buddy.

A few minutes later the arm was around the neck again and when my friend tried to push him away rhett butler licked him on the cheek. The bartender witnessed all this and my friend was like what the hell man and the bartender said he wasn’t allowed to do anything

As things got tense rhett butler turned his attention to the frat bros and calling them handsome young men and even bought them drinks and it seemed that they were creeped out but a free drink is a free drink

And then he licked one of them on the face and the frat bros were telling the guy to meet them outside because they were gonna kick his arse so the restaurant manager stepped in. “Sir I believe it’s time for you to go home, I’ve already booked an uber for you” as he handed him the check. His bill was like 900 bucks

After they walked him to the uber I asked the bartender what the hell had just happened. The bartender said that it happens all the time. He shows up and gets real drunk and harasses young dudes but he always runs up an $800 bill so they buy him an uber back to his house across the river when it gets to be too much. He even has a wife. I asked what he does for a living to be able to do that multiple days a week.

The bartender says “oh, he owns a sugarcane plantation across the river”

Mr. Trump tear down this tariff wall. Or let every other farmer get the same deal

Most people don't realize this but there is almost a global sweetener monopoly. But, because the cost is "cheap" nobody really cares.

All the sugar plants in Louisiana are owned by the same English company. That same company owns the corn processing plant I used to work at in Illinois. When I was there, there was another plant built pulling our workers away. They were building this plant as a competitor because they KNEW they would be purchased.

This same English company owns almost everything, or used to globally.

The ultra capitalist deregulation crowd is partly to blame.

It’s cheap, the FDA allows it, and people buy it.

This, and we’re also a very large country, mass wise. Food has to be more shelf stable for transport and sitting on shelves.

In Europe, there are less options for brands with smaller grocery stores (product sits on shelves shorter) and much smaller geographic footprint so doesn’t travel as far so less need for the many preservatives we use

You've clearly never seen much of the shite sold at Carrefour or Tesco. About all the differences "protecting consumers" is about artificial dyes, and little else. The EU/UKI is not a magical land of food made by fairies.

Republicans and shitty policies that support big business at the expense of the American people sort of go hand in hand.

The sugar boys

I grew up in an area that had a lot of sugar cane farmers. They are hard workers, but they have gotten rich off of American policy, not product. We always laugh about how they continually poor mouth, all while driving $100,000 trucks and their wives driving $100,000 suvs, and taking vacations all over the world.

Tate and Lyle used to own Domino, but Florida Crystals (ASR Group) owns them now.
Cargill co owns a plant in LA
And the other big player is U.S. Sugar, who bought Imperial Sugar Company that was owned by the Louis Dreyfus Group.

Sugar Land TX, was an old Sugar plantation bought by Imperial Sugar closed in the early 2000’s.

NAFTA opened the gates to Mexican sugar, but it was shite. Now new restrictions are keeping US sugar high and profitable, hence all owned by US Companies now.
