Travel around the world and you will notice that none of the American brands that you find in stores contain HFCS.

Even our fast food brands overseas are miles better in my experience.

Corn lobby?

It’s definitely the lobby but have you ever tasted overseas brands and food? It’s nothing in comparison to ours, not that it’s an excuse and that we shouldn’t fix it. Honestly RFK and MAHA has been a lot weaker than expected and a bit disappointed with such.

Sugar lobby

The sugar boys got Reagan to pass a bill where 85% of sugar sold in the us had to be grown here

Because of high prices in the 70s and this bill passed in 1981, everything that could switch to hfcs switched and everything that couldn’t like candy and baking moved their factories to Canada and Mexico

I think Trump should either shut that down or protect every crop like sugar is protected

Hfcs is cheaper than American sugar so it wins

It’s not cheaper than Latin American sugar though so Mexican coke tastes better than us coke

This is about the one and only example. Go to Europe and the rest of the world and the soda tastes like shite. But it is one of our biggest problems to our healthcare as I noted it’s not an excuse to have better tasting food.

I never know on PB when you slip in and out of character.

I have gone through the chemistry in depth several times on TD.

The difference in taste between US and Mexican Coke has nothing to do with the type of sugar used because they become chemically identical very quickly when mixed. Coke is an acid and when you mix sucrose into an acid it undergoes acid-catalyzed sucrose inversion and becomes free fructose and glucose.

This is the relevant equation and I am more than happy to discuss the O-chem and the actual reaons why Mexican Coke tastes different from US Coke.

I think it comes down to supply chains, right? As others have pointed out - corn is cheap and abundant in USA. Not so in gErmany. But in Germany they typically do not use cane, they use beets. So we get our sugar from corn while Europe largely gets their sugar from beets.

Other countries regulate their food to protect consumers in ways American corporations won't let our government do.

What countries regulate HFCS for health reasons? As opposed to protectionist reasons?

It’s cheap, the FDA allows it, and people buy it.

Less carbonation? Carbonic acid is the acidic part of soft drinks. Seems to me most other countries have less.

I am not a scientist and have not done any research on this topic, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express in Evanston WY last week.

I'd have to google. I'm not really aware of HFCS regulations, specifically. I was thinking more of regulations about chemicals allowed in farming, and different food dyes.

The food you get in many countries is still locally grown and is not corporate farmed like we see here. Whatever I order in eastern Europe, there is a very good chance it was grown and produced fairly closely to whatever community I am in.
