Why didn't watergate taint the republican party for a generation?

Pretty incredible, really. Ford nearly beat carter only 2 years after nixon resigned. And then, only 6 years later, reagan won in a very big landslide.

Shouldn't it have been fairly easy for the dems to make the GOP "the party of scandal" in the ten years or so following watergate?

Bush 2 hurt the GOP more than Nixon did longterm. Carter was an albatross across the dem neck longer than nixon was a republican albatross.

Nixon was a genius and a good (borderline great) President. W. Bush was the worst two-term President in US history.

Because the ideas and the policies from the Left are so damn bad.

Watergate was a constant source of irritation to the Republican Party through at least the early nineties.

ETA: There was “gate” after “gate” after “gate” allegations levied against them. Constantly invoking the ghost of Nixon.

The Dems picked Carter, and God gave us Reagan.

Not to mention. Let's be blunt here.

In 2018, Watergate wouldn't even make the top 10 scandals of the decade.

Obama was a better president than Bush in your eyes?

the R's were the ones who went to Nixon and told him his actions were indefensible and he would have to go, contrast that with the D's that circled the wagons and whored themselves to protect Bill Clinton.
.
And that is the difference between the 2 parties

He didn't impress me any either, but this is just dumb. We haven't even begun to get to the bottom of the damage Obama has done to this country. The corruption was stem to stern for his entire presidency.

A major part was the fact that Carter was a debacle.

One thing that helped the Republicans was the way they took ownership of the problem and forced Nixon out.

It became a bad apple thing rather than the party being corrupted.

Because its primary goal was to taint the presidency itself, and it worked.

No. LBJ, Grant, and Wilson were worse.

The primary goal was the man himself. Democrats loathed him. He did not help his own case because of his chicanery.

The term "post-Watergate" does not refer to Republicans alone.

2 reasons...

1.) Nixon was actually seen as a great president before watergate happened. He won in a HUGE landslide in 1972, and I thought his handling of the Vietnam War was great.

2.) Reagan got the party back on track and redirected its focus to his conservative principles. Reagan was seen as a different kind of republican than Nixon. It also helped that Reagan was a skilled orator, and Carter was kind of a bore.
